View Full Version : Real Names

ToddP

Until now, there has not been a requirement that people have their real names in their profile. This has always been Norm's policy and it appears that some people have confused the two and thought it was policy here also.

However, it is NOW policy. After thinking it over, I see no reason that anyone should hide behind a false identity or pseudonym. There is no valid reason to use any name other than your own.

Everyone is welcome to register using whatever name they choose. However it will now be a requirement of this forum that your real name be available within your profile. It is recommended that you include your real name and hometown as part of your signature like I've done (see below). Anyone diagreeing with this policy, I apologize and hope this won't prevent you from participating.

Anyone currently in the Federal Witness Protection program is exempted. ;)

Everyone is encouraged to KINDLY ask others to adhere to this policy. Please refer them to this thread.

Good move Todd. This was my suggestion from the begining. I never forget a friend.

Hello Todd,

Is it possible, or would it be simple, to come up with lists of members by state?

ToddP

Chuck,

I think its a great idea. Right now this software does not allow any additional fields for the profile. We would need a "state" field to be able to sort the database. I've been seriously considering upgrading the forum to vBulletin which is a much more feature rich forum system. vBulletin would probably allow this type of feature.

Besides not having any time right now, I'm a little worried that people are getting tired of changes on the board. The couple server changes, although for the better may have caused some people to give up.

Any feedback on upgrading the forum?

Todd,

All feedback has been positive, except for one.
I received the following as a part of a private email:

"I really Loved the old format, where you would just click on
New Messages and read everything posted since your last session."

Todd,

I wonder if the sort-by-state function couldn't be maintained in another application available from the URL. I LOVE the current "search new" function.

I think that any way that the board can be upgraded is a good idea. Check out http://www.invisionpower.com they have good forum software that I use on my site

All right, how are you guys getting your miniature pictures back in your profile? I didn't see a place to add it.

I found it under Edit Options (not in the Edit Profile area like I thought).:D

At the top of every page there is a button that says "user cp"

Click on that, then there are some options to complete your profile.

Trevor,

It may take a little while for the system to catch up to the older posts.

How dose the junior member, member senor member designation work?
I don’t know if it is good that I’m a senor member of the forum. People may think I know what I am talking about. :)

John,

IT is predicated on the number of posts a person makes.
You can also change the title in the 'User CP' on the upper left of the screen. Click on 'Edit Profile' and you can create a custom user title.

Thanks Mike
I wondered the same thing (Junior member), people might think I'm 12.
Maybe not a bad thing, I think like that sometimes.

the other thing you can do is make a contribution to the forum and get upgraded to supporter. IMO the best title you can have.

I would like to know who are those new members added in this forum please.
Some of them have really weird names and are from weird places.
The last new member at this time has a name that makes me think they are
not sincere.

I dont want to start a polemic about this but it looks doubtful that they do not accept the concept of giving real names and other required details.

I dont know if I'm the only one thinking this way but via internet, one can land anywhere without being watched or can do anything strange to a system.

Again, I dont want to arm anyone with this, but this forum's policy is that we must all identify sincerely.

Whats the general opinion?

I agree. But with only two administrators it is hard for them to police every post.

If you notice something that does not follow the rules. Send a message to the forum administrator with some details.

I didn't see Charles post earlier.

Let me tell you how bad the registration has gotten. EVERY day the forum gets 30-40 new registrations. There are only usually 3-4 that are legitimate. I go through every registration and look for a "realistic" name and location, plus the e-mail address tells me alot.

For some reason the Spammers have really come at the forums hard in the last year. I didn't even review memberships until about a year ago then we just started getting a load of spammers registering.

Even with the review, occasionally someone will slip through. Just let me know.

Ce forum est un lien important entre nous tous, mais il faudrait ajouter le pays à l'adresse.
Exemple : Usa...Australie...Italie...etc..

This forum is an important bond between us all, but it would be necessary to add the country to location.
Example: USA... Australia... Italy...etc

Todd,
I vote Aye, for better and more complete ID's. If only to help each of us understand where a post is coming from. ie, many parts of the US and the world have various regs and laws regulating rotor flight, let alone customs and accepted habits.
This is a GREAT exchange of ideas and discussions of all type and kind. I'm 70+ yr old and have been involved in several hobbies over the years and next to none this is the breast user forum I have seen. Well now, there was this little letter a bunch of girls would "put out" down in San Diego when I was stationed there between Korea and Nam, but that is a different story....:tape:....

Todd,

Walker here in Tumwater. I'm thinking about adding a forum for my business on my website http://www.apexkarting.com. I was wondering if you could call me @ 360-705-2739 (w) or 360-280-7131 (c) to tell me about your experience with 1)vBulletin and 2)being the admin for a BB.

Todd, This has probably been covered before but in addition to the posters real name, city, state and Country I believe that there should be required fields in the aviation part that require an answer. If someone has no experience thay should say so. Thay should also be required to list their ratings, licenses, etc.. Those of us who have been around the forum a few years pretty much have it figured out but many newbies won't have this advantage.

I of course will make sure mine name and location are correct shortly but how will it be policed ?

How do we know their name and location are true, even more difficult with aviation experience etc. If I say I have 10,000 hrs but only have ten how will you know ?

Its a good idea and I trust that most ppl will be truthful, but that doesn't mean we can trust the information given.

Two downsides to listing ratings, hours etc.,
1. Are they true?
2. Do we need more pissing contests than we already have?
3. Dont you know plenty of folks with more hours than God
who STILL haven t a clue?
4. I need to learn to count.

There really is no way to verify any of this information unless I know the person, or someone else can vouch for them. I don't have the time or resources to conduct FBI-level background investigations.

I weed out the ones with obviously fake registrations and take a chance on the others.
If a spammer gets in, don't respond to their threads. Just let me or Ron know about it and we'll get rid of it the next time we log on.

And don't click their links either. :)

We don't need to police and verify. If someone is claiming 10,000 hrs it won't take more than a couple of post to know if its all smoke and mirrors. I personally have much more respect for some one with no flying experience who adimits it and who has asked and or answered an intelligent question.

I put my hours in because Im proud to have what I have and accident free. Im also proud of the three tours I did in Nam but I dont talk about it. Im also proud of the 25 years of federal service I have, and the fact that my daughter flies the baddest helicopter on the planet for the US ARMY.

Anyone want to question me about any of this? I thought not.
