A BMW R1100 102hp powered trike arrived this week at our airfield, It was the first time to see this conversion in the flesh. This engine is one neat installation, It has a frewheeling clutch and is one of the sweetest sounding motors I've heard. Here's a few pics. would look good on a bare bones Dominator tandem..

Hello,

A friend here has the same setup and it really is sweet. Starting with the purring soft sound and not ending with a mad thrust output, which lifts the trike up at a 45 Degree angle.

Kai.

He says there isn't much vibration, except for a bit of resonance a around 2100rpm, 50rpm above or below and the vibes are gone. He has 100 hrs on the machine

Besides being a very nice looking setup and a really cool looking prop. You take some awsome pictures, every detail in focus, clear, and sharp.

That is a nice looking setup!!!
With all these new engines being used maybe Rotax will feel some competition over the next few years and lower their price, either way it all good for us.

I used my Sony Ericsson W705 phone, I think the light was just good on the day

I flew a Neuform-prop on my last excursion. Less noise and and more thrust. Just what we need. I wonder what the numbers will say, when the re-assess the noise level.

Hey nice Massey Ferguson 135 there in the background... :)

Does he have any problem keeping the cyl heads cool? Very nice looking conversion.

Scott,
Looks like that MF tractor is getting close to becoming a 'pusher'...:lalala:

Does he have any problem keeping the cyl heads cool? Very nice looking conversion.

I'm guessin' it's an 'oil-head', hence the oil cooler?, in the second pic. Looks like the perfect way to tame the BMW cooling problem.....
I have a BMW boxer and would love to do THAT conversion....Beautiful!

Hi Kai, What aircraft was the Nuform prop on?

Trez, yep its the oil cooled head engine, I asked the owner about the cooling and if it ran hot, he said he had to put a bit of duct tape on the oil cooler to get the temps up a bit. though his cruise rpm wold be a bit lower than a gyros.

here's a link to another bmw conversion gearbox maker, I think it was discussed on the forum before:

Not sure if it is practical, but I always thought a S&S motor (V twin Harley style) would be a great display at a place such as bike week. Imagine a hundred thousand people standing around a gyro with that Harley sound. Could be on to something.

WHY

Yea, it would vibirate to much the rotors would look like noodles .

They did have one, ( HOG AIR) they flew it on a Zenith, it sounded great! but I think it was just heavy, and they may have had some issues with keeping the cyl heads cool. The TC88b is a counterbalanced engine, The EVOs or even the first gen Twin Cam would vibrate way too much.

Looks like SkyRay has bought out Hog Air, get yours now! http://www.skyray.us/engine.htm

Hello,

met with my trike colleague again and shot some photos of his motor. It is an 1050 cc if I recall correctly. It has 2 plugs and 4 coils, 2 directly on the main plugs.

Now the question for the experts. After about an hour of running at cruise, the motor develops vibration and at the same time the left exhaust temp goes up.
Initial theory: The ignition fails on the right side, the lambda probe reduces mixture, thus causing over-heating. After replacing everything ignition-related on the right side, it still happens. What can it be?

The other photo is of the very flashy Eagle trike with an 1100 cc engine.

Kai.

Thanks for the photos guys. I just purchased an R11oo rt engine complete, and will be converting it for an installation on the next generation of the "Miss Fit" type gyro. Any pictures of this engine conversion will be appreciated.
To all you pack rats out there, I am scrounging parts, if you have anything you want to get rid of, I will be in the market for all things gyro related.
