OK Scott: Visualise bowing-down, and general grovelling in your direction...
"O yea, O yea, we're not worthy", etc...
Seriously though: Nice piece of work :)

Thanks!
Yes the engine is a Suzuki 530cc. from an Arctic Cat snowmobile.
I just hope that it runs as good as it looks. :)

it looks good indeed, and you gyro looks light..
is your engine a personnal "fitting" ? i mean where is the exhaust from, the gearbox?
is it cheaper than a rotax?
thank you

Scott, what's the finish you've used on the quadrant sides?
Looks fantastic.

As usual, this is the quality of craftsmanship I expected of you Scott. It's really shaping up nicely! Are you now beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel?
Should you change your mind, and want some of the boys to show up for a weekend get-together sometime after you are comfortable with your new machine, I would sure like to be there. Maybe Phil will have his in the air pretty soon also. I'll bet Ron and Screw could break away too.

Zeeoo, the engine is liquid cooled, rated at 75-85 Hp depending on exhaust type, The gearbox is a rotax A box with custom adaptor plate. The pipe is R&D aerosports, but made for a rotax 532-582. Parts are about 1/3 the price of rotax, I'll let you know how it works out.
Screw, Yeah I knew I should have made two, but you'll have to wait! the prop is 60".
Banaari, the finish is home powder coat. The gray is called "silver vein" it is like an industrial hammered finish.
Chuck, yes things are looking like they are coming together, I have decided, I am not going to cut corners, on this gyro, as far as fit and finish, you know I wouldn't cut corners on anything else. You know if I have an informal get together, I'll call the gang.

Scott, what is your prop diameter, and did you say earlier that the gear ratio is 2:1?
scottessex
10-13-2004, 02:07 AM
yes Chuck, 2-1 60"

Not the best angle, but the 3" you said you will cut off the tail will work. You can move the mast sopport like I have it on my two place.

That will still give me at least 2" above the prop, and I won't have to dog-leg the brace. I will run into some problems with the pre-rotator, but I think I figured that out too.
If I run into any problems Brent, do you mind if I give you a call?

Scott,
I'm curious about the home powder coat finish you put on the throttle quadrant. How durable is it? Do you have to bake it on? I saw something about home powder coating in my last Harbor Freight flyer, is this the system you used?
I ask because I have had my gyro taken apart and stored for a while and now my paint job sucks and chips easily( long story). I just assembled it all and I know I need to redo the paint job. Just looking for something better.
Thanks

The kit I used was from Eastwood, very simple to do, holds up very well. But yes you have to bake it, usually about 350-400 degrees for about 10 to 20 minutes, then let it cool and it is a done deal.
I also did the rotorhead a couple of weeks ago.

The size of the part depends on the size of your oven.

An old biker freind i knew powder coated parts with one of those units from harbor freight, it worked out ok, but the key is bakeing it at the right temp.
he used an old house oven. after some practice he got pretty good at it.
I had bought a Pizza oven to try with, but then found out later what I thought where just selfs in the way turned out to be the heating units. so since i could not put things the size i wanted to in it I just sold it.
one guy i knew did really small parts in a toaster over.
Hope this helps ya some.

That quadrant and gyro look great!! The only thing that I would change is the exhaust spring setup.(broken props etc..) C.P.S. sells a kit that holds the exhaust together with the use of plates. I got a set and the look and work GREAT,with no chance of breaking and going through a prop in flight. They sell for around $30.00 a set and they're CHEAP insurance :)

If he puts safety wire through the springs he shouldn't have to worry about that should he?

Thanks Dale, in case you didn't notice this is an old thread, and the "under construction gyro met with an untimely demise in a taxi accident. The nose wheel pivot broke causing the gyro to cartwheel and pretty much destroy itself.
I still have the engine and it is unhurt, sorry I can't say the same about the prop, tail, airframe!
I am currently flying a Soma gyro with a Hirth engine, But the Suzuki is still on the back burner, possibly for the soma in the future.

Tim, That's a good idea! I've heard of people putting silicone on them also, to keep the parts ,if they do break, all together. Butyou may not notice a broke spring due to the safety wire holding them together. The plates are a definate solution to the problem.Besides the obvious benefits, they look good ,are cheap ,and you'll never have to worry again! :)

I agree Dale, I have the spring safty wired , but the clamp looks like a much more secure mount.
And YES, things are better now!
