Well back from a long week of gyroplanes and portajohns! Had a great time myself and thankfully we had no mishaps and good weather all week. Winds were light and temps were just right.

It was a pleasure to meet alot of new faces, and to visit with some of the more familar ones too! John Stevens was a good camping mate - so as long as you like to be woke up at 5 in the morning when he wakes up  - And his daughter Snores louder than he does! :D

Got to fly alot of gyros there. Got a chance to fly a Pit Bull that has been groud bound for years, and it flew pretty good once in the air. Got to fly Chris CLS447's sweet two place. It was also a nice machine and you'd be hard pressed to find a better detailed or built machine - if only it had 20 more horses! - Also got a chance to zoom around in ground effect in the Starbee gyro's bright yellow bee, It needed a better prop or a few more horsepower for my fat butt, but it was smooth and fun to fly... Anyone building a gyrobee like that one will be very happy!

Anyway here is a ton of pictures.

Ron did you take those pics with that little thin camera? those came out great.

All in all I think everyone there had a great time, was really fun meeting some of the guys from the Forum. Glad you got a shot of my Freinds jet ranger I still had my camera packed when he flew in. that was Jim Breznay of the South carolina Helicopter Association.

About half of the shots were with my cheap thin radio shack camera and the other half were with my camcorder which has a cheapy digital camera built in.

Go ahead and rub it in Screw. It sure looks like a great get-together. Maybe next year, and at the 2nd Annual SX Days. In fact, when Scott gets his new machine flying, maybe we should all invite ourselves to his place. What do you think, JB?

Don't know about the rest of you guys and gals, but the next Gyro gathering on my schedule is Wauchula Florida for the Sunstate New years fly in. Great little fly in worth the trip. Then back to Florida in the Spring for Bensen Days....

That is unless there is a Fall SX days in the works... That is tempting

The weather sure would be cooler!
How about a thanksgiving turkey fly in? :p

GyroRon
10-11-2004, 04:45 PM
Hmmmm... Turkey day at Scotts place, Can't do Thanksgiving day itself but could do the weekend before or after. After means leftovers - Yuck! - so what about before?

Besides after Thanksgiving John might not have the favorable thrust to weight ratio he is enjoying as of now ;)

The cooler weather by Thanksgiving may offset any wieght gain due to the holiday. If I'm wrong and performance is lacking, I can always force myself to puke before I fly.

Just an idea.

It will most likely have to be in the spring, I can't do another one right now, I am doing some work on the house/hangar, and need to get it done before it gets cold.
Besides, my gyro won't be up and flying by next month, you think I am gonna have a fly in and not fly?! ;)

But we will have another one I promise!

Ron are you at the airport on most sundays?,I had a guy on line today near charolotte that is looking for a gyro,I told him to look for you some day,as you always know where to find a good machine. the guy flys an ultralight now.

GyroRon
10-12-2004, 05:10 PM
I am usually there at some part of the day, but rarely do I just hang out at the hangar all day. I usually fly off to a fly in or to another airport or somewhere, but if someone comes out sooner or later they will run into me.

:D Pretty good, Ron! :D I got my gearbox back yeaterday. The new gears are beautiful. I like Lockwood a lot!

GyroRon
10-15-2004, 03:44 AM
I just swapped my gears Wednesday afternoon. What a major pain in the ASS!!!! I bolted on my prop with the same pitch setting as before and went out to the runway to do a crow hop to see what my RPMS would be with the new ratio and same pitch as before...... I ended up somehow overheating my clutch and it slipped like crazy and I had to abort that takeoff. Tried it again a minute later and got lockup on the clutch and only saw 5100 RPMs at straight and level flight 60 mph 10 feet above the runway. With the old ratio I should have seen 6500-6600 RPM. SO.... that means I should end up having to take alot of pitch out which was my goal. I am worried that the new ratio may be too fast and not enough mechanical advantage for us with turning the prop and spinning the pre rotator too. I can't understand why my clutch slipped. Anyway this weekend I will be re pitching my prop and doing another static thrust test to see if there was any improvement. If no improvements are found I am going to put the 3 to 1's back in.

Chuck Irby
10-15-2004, 04:16 AM
Ron, I went from 18.5 degrees to 16.25 degrees and kept the same engine RPM. I'll get back to you in a few days, as I'm leaving for a fly-in.

Ron, don't jump to conclusions too early. Give it some time, for you to get used to the diferent characteristics etc.
