Good info Ken thanks. LORAN became quickly outdated after GPS came to light. I wish though we could have other long range options though.... Oh I see you are in Clearwater. Hi Neighbor :)

Hopefully, it has gone to the same place as 'pressure-pattern nav'. Ugh!

Gabor,
Hello back at ya. I am also right there in with you- I really liked loran and the updates were free. It even recognized when you entered a new area and would upload the regional data base automatically.
I guess we better hope those GPS satellites have been built to handle emp pulses and neutrino bursts or one huge solar flare might be a problem for a whole lot of people.
At least the technology of loran has paid for itself and if you think of it - GPS is loran in space.

Ken that is exactly what GPS is :) Of course we can always have outages...... Nothing is bullet proof as of yet. What do you fly? UH1 or 212?

I don't know what you guys are talking about. I still miss the old A/N stations. ;-)

Hopefully they won't drop VOR anytime soon….

Flew my 210 from Colorado Springs to the Florida Keys and back last spring, didn't use a VOR once.

Well, I just hope they're not considering ending the bonfires on hilltops. Nothing like old tech for reliability! ;)

Or a nice hand held flash light straight up into the sky and spiral down following the light :) (does that qualify as a non precision approach?)

Alas, poor Loran, I knew it well.
As far as interruptions..you didn't need an EMP to mess it up, a good, strong thunderstorm usually did the trick.
I just had my ADF antenna put back on (after it was removed for a windshield upgrade) on my Bonanza. I still like listening to AM radio sometimes while flying long, boring legs. Granted, most folks have switched to satellite radio, but I'm still old school.
I "taught" my young CFII how to do an ADF approach on my last Instrument Competency Checkride. He'd never used one before. There are still a few around.

Jon isn't that cool when you show new stuff to either the instructor or the examiner. I found it to be always the case that from that point your check ride is considered to be successful :)

I spent my helicopter time as a UH-1 Crewchief.
Maybe we can reanimate Omega while we are at it- Just Joking- REALLY just joking.

Ahh...inertial navigation..."throw a rock and follow it."
And there were 'Low Freq. Range' approaches...........
