Come to Greenville in the Fall...and FLY!
The Wright brothers gave birth to civilian flying 100 years ago. What is now called “general aviation” is still alive and thriving, and nowhere more so than in Greenville, Illinois, home to one of Southern Illinois’ most active airports. On October 2 and 3, 2004 everyone can share in this airport’s excitement about flying and help us celebrate aviation in Illinois. The first weekend in October, the Greenville airport will hold its AIRstravaganza, a celebration of a century of flight and of the Greenville community. That celebration runs in conjunction with Greenville Apple Day, an annual festival in what many describe as true “Norman Rockwell” town. It will include food, music, dancing and many displays and activities.
AIRstravaganza focuses on exposing the public to all aspects of general aviation. One of the most popular features will be fly-alongs. For reasonable prices ranging from $15 to $70 a head, visitors can actually fly along in Cessna 172s, gliders, a classic twin engine Beech 18, a Stearman biplane, a vintage DC-3 airliner in the markings of Ozark Airlines, hot air balloons and other fascinating aircraft. Some aircraft, such as the DC-3, should be pre-booked. Call 618-664-0926 for information.
A number of other aircraft will also be on display at AIRstravaganza, including warbirds, such as a B-25, T- Texan, C1A COD, Russian and Chinese military aircraft, experimentals, homebuilts, classics and general aviation aircraft of all types. Throughout both days, parachute jumpers from the Greater St. Louis Parachute Club will be doing solo and combined jumps.
Also, this year for the first time, Greenville will be inviting new sport pilots from all over to fly in and celebrate their aircraft and the new Sport Pilot rating. Sport pilots and all other pilots are invited to join us at a Sunday Fly-in Breakfast featuring sausage, pancakes, soft drinks coffee and other treats.
AIRstravaganza will also include an automobile show sponsored by Laidlaw Transportation. The show, which will take place on Sunday, will include custom and classic cars of all vintages. More than 150 cars are expected. Saturday, show participants will rally to AIRstravaganza, so you can expect to see extraordinary cars both days.
Laidlaw Transportation will be providing busses back and forth into Greenville both Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday afternoon, a hound and hare balloon race will launch from the airport. Saturday evening from 7 to 10 there will be a swing era jazz band and dancing.
Parking at AIRstravaganza is free and there is no admission fee.
For information about AIRstravaganza, call 618-664-0926 or 618-675-3553 or email john@johnalber.com.
