Okay just a note. Jamie Bodie will be making a radio broadcast during the fly in at ROC, If you would like to listen Please bring a radio with you.
Also we still have a few camping spaces still open if anyone would like to reserve a spot for their RV or would like to have a tent space with power.
Want to mention something that has been mentioned before. If this is your first time to ROC - or any gyro fly in -or if you have maybe been before, but haven't gotten to know some of your fellow gyronauts that you will likely see at ROC...... Don't be shy! Please come and introduce yourself and join in with the group. We should have a campfire going most every night and there is always good times, lot's of stories told, and plenty of beer consumed! The campfire is a great place to break the ice and get to know your fellow friends in rotorcraft. Also.... Every night for dinner most people will drive into town to one place or another. This is also a great time to get to know people and to start friendships, so if you haven't made plans for dinner by later in the day, ask some of the guys where they are eating and then go join them. At both ROC and Bensen Days it is not uncommon for a group of 20-30 gyro people all going to the same place to eat together. Remember these fly ins are not just about flying, they are a social event first and foremost as far as I am concerned and that is what makes them so special.
Last if you going to ROC why not post it here in this thread and tell us when you plan to arrive and for how long your staying.

I am working my tail off right now to have the whole of next week off for the fly in. I hope to be able to head down to Aiken either late Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning at the latest. Plan to stay till Sunday mid day.

Chris, I will give you a call.
not sure of the gate code, I know it is the CTAF freq, 122.8 or 122.9 or 123.00 Can't remember.
You will love what I got on my gyro! Also got the Harley on the trailer too so I can use it to ride down to McDonalds! I am all loaded up and heading to Aiken in the morning.

All the wiring is done. Water is running. Got to replace the shower valve. Damn thing won't turn off. A little patch of grass needs mowing and some weedeater at the fence needs doing. Still need to erect the tents. No big deal.
It's ready! You all come on.

All:
We hope you are coming to ROC 2004! Nights are cool (upper 50s, lower 60s), so bring your long underwear. But the days are warm (80s) and we have clear skies and moderate winds. We have firewood.
Saturday and Sunday, Ray Pierce, John Magnan, Mark Slone, J.F. and James Skidmore, Todd Day, Ray's wife and his daughter, Stephanie were setting things up.
On Monday the 4th, Ron Awad, Tim Verroi and Pat McNear arrived. Ron and Tim were flying their gyros around the field by late afternoon. Ron and J.F. Skidmore did do some grass trimming. John Magnan, J.F. Skidmore and Ray Pierce completed the setting up of the new shower tent and new shower plumbing. Ray finished all electrical work. To see J.F. Skidmore helping Ron Awad setting up his tent, with Ron Awad's motorcycle at your left and Tim Verroi's gyro at your right, click on http://jcmservices.net/Skidmore100404a.jpg

NOTE THE BEAUTIFUL BLUE SKY!
Some changes in entering the Aiken Airport.
Zipper Robbins, who runs the Aiken airport, wants us to have fun --- he has a penthouse in the large hangar "mansion" that overlooks the ROC field. He sits there and watches what we're doing. His business is running the airport and selling planes. He is a long-time pilot, though not with gyros. But he has invited us there and wants us to enjoy ourselves!
However there are several things that Zipper says need to be followed, especially since they have re-paved the runways and added on to one.
-------- Do not enter any more by the main gate at the FBO terminal, so you don't need a passcode.
-------- Only if you have a large motor home, you can use the second, little used entrance at the fence. This is at the end of a short gravel road just south of the main entrance road to the airport. It is at the end of a line of trees that stretch from the main airport entrance south along Highway 1 perhaps 100 yards away. Turn right there. The gate is closed, but not locked, open the gate, pull in your large motorhome and then close the gate. Only use this gate again when you leave ROC on Saturday or Sunday.
To clarify: The main gate is the one that you get to by turning on the main airport entrance off Highway 1. It is next to the FBO building. DON'T USE IT! The second road and gate is off Highway one, just 100 yards down Highway 1 from the main entrance, at the end of a row of trees, south of the main airport entrance. It is in a field that the airport fence crosses, with a gate. The gravel road is short and straight, but has no road signs (go slowly past the main airport entrance on Highway 1). The third entrance is the one at the big brick sign.
--------- ALL OTHERS use the back entrance to ROC:
This will be used by smaller motorhomes, trailers, and for regular coming and going. Zipper said that big asphalt trucks used it for the repaving, so we can use it without problems. To get to the back entrance, go south on Highway 1 past the main airport entrance and turn at the road that has a large brick sign "Aviation Business Park" Go to the end of that road -- a cul-de-sac -- and turn at the road to the left into the woods. It's one-way so watch for oncoming vehicles!
---------- No bicycles, cars, motorcycles etc. on the runway, taxiway or infield. They can be used, of course, for going around from place to place in the ROC area or in the woods etc. Also the taxiway can be used for a short time for the large motorhomes coming from the middle gate in the fence. And keep all motorhomes, vehicles etc. inside the white line that is parallel to the taxiway -- that taxiway is active, even for fixed wing aircraft with long wings!
AN INTERESTING SIDE NOTE: Ron Awad rode his motorcycle around the taxiway just for a short time. Zipper Robbins saw it from his "perch" in his penthouse and sent a message "Don't do that any more!" Recall what happened with Steve McGowan at Barnwell several years ago?
---------- In the air, try to make your turn even farther from the main runway 06/24 so a Citation jet or a business turboprop, as happened last year, on a 10 mile final does not even think you are in his flight path. If someone is not comfortable making the turn, just continue on farther making a larger pattern. See http://pra13.com/roc_2002_information.htm for details. The airport depends on those planes for their income.
CAMPING SPOTS Many have names on them --- don't use them unless it's your name, except for a few minutes to move around. Only go into unlabeled spots, or in the area around the shower/portajohns "outside" of the main fence. Click: on:
http://jcmservices.net/ROC2004CampingLocation.PDF for the current empty locations and also the other camping areas.

Do we have to reserve a camping spot with electric hook up? Just wondering, i'm planning to attend. Ron R.

Ron R.,
No you don't have to reserve a spot with electrical hookups, but they're going fast.
If you are absolutely, positively sure you are coming, click on:
http://jcmservices.net/ROC2004CampingLocation.PDF for the current empty locations and also the other camping areas.
Then e-mail me and tell me your full name, the location you will absolutely pay for, and when you are coming. Since ROC is HERE there's no time to pay me now, just when you see me -- I'm the gray haired middle age guy (with now, a slight paunch) who is pestering everyone about getting things done and looks hyper, perhaps needing a sedative.

Not a lot going on --- many flew ---- Ron Awad was late flying back from the Trenton airport and got Tim Verroi a little peeved since he and Maxie were waiting for Ron so they could go someplace to eat and Ron was taking his time coming back --- note that there's a number of places nearby to fly to from the Aiken Airport where ROC 2004 is located.
To see a photo of Ron, Maxie Wildes, Tim Verroi and his lovely daughter Tiffany, click on: http://jcmservices.net/RonMaxieTimROC100504.jpg I took the photo just as they were leaving to eat this evening.
A few more people came in. The weather is great, not too warm during the day, and around 60-65 degrees at night.
We're expecting a big crowd tomorrow, Wednesday, the unofficial start of ROC 2004 (actually Thursday is the "early bird" day but many come in Wednesday afternoon and evening).

Wednesday of ROC 2004, the early-early bird day, saw many people and gyros coming in. Chris & Shar Spadafora, from Reading; PA, "Bo" Collins and Dan Leslie from Macon, GA; Laura and Dana Linn with the gyrobees from Worcester, Mass.; Randy Pelt from Blacksburg, VA; Ernie and Connie Boyette from Wimauma (same address but town change from Lithia), FL; Ora and Ann Cook from LaBelle, Fl -- Ora didn't bring his motor home or gyro -- his trailer is being used to hold the household goods of a neighbor whose house was destroyed by one of the four recent hurricanes; George Moore from Hanover, PA with his buddy Captain George Silver from Graysonville, MD; and many others.
The most striking of the arrivals was that of Chris & Shar Spadafora. They painted words on their motorhome about "ROC Bound" see http://jcmservices.net/Spadaforas100604.jpg .
A lot of great visiting, fellowship and flying went on all day. There was a welcome overcast sky, but it was warm -- low 80s. But the nights are going to be cold -- mid 50s and the sun will shine until late Sunday when there is a 10% chance of rain. But, by then, most will have left ROC.
Here is a partial view of the camping/gyro parking area along the taxiway. In the foreground is Ron Awad's setup, then the main tents, after that is Tim Verroi then Ernie Boyette: http://jcmservices.net/ROC04camping100604.jpg
A partial flight line is here: http://jcmservices.net/SomeGyros100604.jpg --- and remember that this is the early-early bird day! October 7th (Thursday) is the official early bird day. Note that at ROC the gyros and tents/motorhomes are right on the edge of the taxiway (at the right in the photo) unlike many other fly-ins.

Note: Scott Essex, George Moore is here waiting for you, along with the Captain!
Man, do we have a fly-in! The Early Bird Day brought many more gyros and pilots/wives/their children/dogs. Nearly 60 people are milling around and 17 gyros in the air, and the big day is tomorrow, Friday, October 8.
Some of the familiar faces or unfamiliar ones you want to attach to names are Captain George Silver, George Moore and Maxie Wildes: http://jcmservices.net/CaptainMooreMaxie100704.jpg talking about ??
Someone in the sky doing fancy maneuvers: http://jcmservices.net/FreeFlight100704.jpg
And here's one photo of gyros on the tarmac where the runway and taxiway join: http://jcmservices.net/GyrosOnTarmac100704.jpg
Many happy couples came to the fly-in --- so you can connect names with faces, here is Shar and Chris Spadafora from Reading, PA -- he brought his Air Command
http://jcmservices.net/Spadaforas100704.jpg
And here is Jonathan Weis and his lovely wife Katherine (from Oriental, NC) in front of his Air Command tandem with a Subaru EJ22: http://jcmservices.net/Weises100704.jpg
We have a lot more visitors from North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania than we have had in the past.
And, instead of being smothered by fancy motorhomes, many are camping out with small campers or tents. They enjoy the hot shower with all possible amenities such as a clean tent enclosure and new shower fixtures.
The air is crisp and cool -- low to mid 70s -- great flying!
So, all of you, come on down, up, or over and join the fun!
I left at around 9:00 PM. Many had gone into town to party. Others were sitting around in small groups gabbing and lying. I had a great Pina Colada created by Chris Spadafora just before I left to go back to my dull computer room.
Topday someone had called me from Ohio, asking if we still were having the fly-in -- it was raining at his house. I returned his call at 11:30 PM and told him the weather was clear, the stars were sparkling in the sky and that any rain would come late Sunday night after everyone was gone, so he should "Come On Down."

A lot of activity today.
The sky was overcast (high clouds) and some felt one or two drops of rain around 2:00 PM --- but it was nothing to speak of --- though the forecasters LIED and said it would be sunny! The sun did come out at times but it was dry all day and will be tomorrow. Temperature in the 70s.
Some ultralights came in, also a gyro person with a fixed-wing Giles 202 (aerobatic, costs around $100,000).
Many more gyronauts in --- Scott Essex, Greg Abbot, Rick Abercombie, Pat O'Brien, Sid Harmon, Tim Heilig, George Hammack, Robert Rominger, John Sliger, Ken Rehler --- to name a few.
Ron Awad tested John Sligar's "naked" PitBull and flew it some. John had modified the engine/redrive/prop to try to get it to fly.
The highlight of the day was in the late afternoon a number of thrust tests were made:
Chris Spadafora --- Air Command Subaru EA81 ----- 470 pounds
Dan McAllister ----- Air Command Subarau EA81 ---- 350 pounds
John Sligar -------- PitBull Subaru EA81 ----------- 270 pounds
Dan Leslie --------- Air Command Super Hirth ------ 460 pounds
Maxie Wildes ------- Air Command Hirth F30 EFI with a 68" 3 blade WarpDrive Prop --- 480 pounds
Brent Brown -------- 2 place trainer MZ 202P 60 hp --- 340 pounds.
AND
Jonathan Weis ---- Air Command Tandem with EJ22 and special 4 barrel carb with hi-pro cams, 4 bladed Warp Drive prop -- 68" blades:
680 pounds!
Jonathan asked me to write that he could have done 700 pounds if he allowed the oil / engine to heat up more.
Most of the front line around the taxiway is filled with tents, campers, motorhomes. And still more are expected tomorrow, Saturday, the 9th.
Rather than give links to photos, I'm giving a link to a Quicktime movie clip. It starts at one part of the flight-line/camper line and ends at one of the pull tests. It might give a "feel" to what's going on at ROC.
NOTE: Clip is only 15 frames per second (from my camera)
also, it is around 7 megabytes. On most computers if you right-click the mouse you can download it; left clicking will run it. You have to have Quicktime installed on your computer to view it; I didn't have time to convert to MPEG. It will take about 50 minutes to download on a dial-up; you can possibly run it from the server if you have wide-band high-speed lines:

Big fat Congrats to my new friend Johnathan (Automan) Wise for his solo. Had I known it was comming, I would have stuck around for the shirt cut. That machine he put together is a monster! 680lbs thrust! With that kind of thrust, it's a no wonder he went with an electric pre-rotator (Easier on the mast :D ).
On a lighter note, apparently Ron A. left the jelly out. Last night we had ants all in the tent. I tried to tell him, but yall know how he is. Ron flew everything that wasn't tied down.
Had fun, do it again next year.

John Sligar,
It was great to see the Pitbull at ROC!
Here are a couple of the many photos I have -- others have more, also.
True, Ron Awad can fly anything well!
Here is the Pitbull taxiing on Sunday: http://jcmservices.net/PitbullTaxiing101004.jpg
And here is the "naked Pitbull" --- John took off the fancy fuselage covering for the test flights -- flying on Saturday with Ron as the pilot: http://jcmservices.net/NakedPitbull100904.jpg
It seems that the prop adjustments John Sligar made worked well.

It was great to be there. I loved every min of it and cannot believe it is over. I enjoyed the heck out of meeting all of my new friends and my old ones.
Ron Awad: Once again proves to be the test pilot of the PRA of the year. I do not think he made more flights in so many machines. He even successfully flew the tractor gyro. I also saw him field many many questions and do his best to welcome new people.
John Stevens: Perhaps the funniest guy you would want to meet. Never short for a joke or flying the pants (minus the hat of course) off of the screwdriver. It flew well !!! His little girl is a hoot too.
Scott Essex: Flew in-in style minus gyro. Great to meet him for the first time.
Maxie Wildes & Dan Leslie Taking up where steve-o left off. He must have burned up more gas along with DAN giving intro rides and some flight training the whole time I was there. I think the public had a great time !!!
I ended up waiting for maxie to get other students and other intro rides out of the way which gave me time to tweak the last little bit of my machine and we finally flew it for real. It flew real solid with good climb rate and for some reason I flew the whole time. I did not even try and kill us like I had in the past... I have only maxie to thank for his patience and his confidence in me.
Chris Spadforda: A wild and crazy guy who just needs a bit more hp to fly that wild side by side.
Ray Pierce and John Magnan did a super job on organization and execution of the battle plan. I do not think anything except the weather could have improved.
Dave Dewinter & wife: Great to see them even though dave was only flying a scooter.
Tim Verroi: His flying was only outdone by his generosity on the Saturday night dinner where he picked up the tab for everyone. SUPER GUY ! He also flew more than anyone in a single place I think......every time I looked up tim was buzzing.
Jamie & Liz with kids: Great to see them too and Jamie finally got his beer !
I know I have missed a few (will post when my head comes down from soloing) and did not get to say hello to Ken Rehler, (haulled all the way from texas) It was great to see all of you.
I have been going to ROC every year for the last 4 years. It has been 2-3 years where the weather was as good as it was at the first one. year 2000. I have watched, I have waited and I have built my heart out working on my machine. I have tasted bitter defeat and humbling failures. Sucess is so much the sweeter !
I finally flew for real and solo'd on Sunday. It was the last gyro in the air before we packed it in. It is a day I will remember the rest of my life.
YEAH !

ROC 2004: Saturday & Sunday, October 9-10
(I stayed overnight Saturday and slept in Monday morning so this is my last reporting post since Saturday morning)
Great weather for all of ROC --- true, we had high clouds each day, but that was wonderful, the sun didn't burn us. Also, it wasn't as cold at night as they predicted so all the firewood I brought didn't need to be used.
Huge amount of activity on Saturday. Hundreds of photos taken. Ron Awad and Larry Gleason posted many.
On Saturday we had a number of fixed-wing aircraft as well as a helicopter come in: http://jcmservices.net/ROC04fixedwing&helicopter100904.jpg
The helicopter was Ken Engram's Robinson R44 from Wagner, SC.
The experimental in the photo is Rick Abercrombie's Zenith CH250 from Atlanta, GA.
We also had a Piper Tripacer, a Giles 202, a Jet Ranger Long Ranger IH, several Cessnas including 172s and a Cardinal, also a Trike from Fountain Inn, SC.
On Saturday evening we had the Potluck and Raffle Drawing. For tax purposes we are not going to reveal the raffle winners, but three were gyronauts at ROC.
Here is one of many photos at the potluck meal:

Note: that's the rear (sorry!) of Laura Linn -- in the yellow Bee outfit -- of the Starbees (Worcester, Mass.) in the back of the flames --- she was making marshmellow "S'mores" for everyone -- you really had to be there to see that!
Sunday morning was still extremely busy, although many had pulled out to head home, we still had this activitiy: http://jcmservices.net/ROC04SundayActivity101004.jpg
But the highlight of Sunday was Jonathan Weis soloing his powerful (680 pounds of thrust) gyro ----- here are some photos:

The cutting of the shirt by Maxie Wildes, Jonathan's instructor. Jonathan's wife, Katherine, said that it was a nice, new shirt, but, too bad, it had to go!
