What are those of you flying Cross Country doing for fuel when Mogas is not generally available at airports?
I know there is a product called TCM you can pour in your fuel tank if you fuel up with 100 LL, that is suppose to cause the lead not to stick to the innards of the engine ~ does anyone have any experience with this?
Can you mix Mogas and 100 LL in your tank ~ say you have a 1/2 tank of Mogas (premimum) and need to top off and all that is available is 100 LL ~ whatcha gonna do or more properly what SHOULD you do?
Most of us know that 100 LL will mess up the O2 sensor - which will inturn cause the computer to improperly mix the fuel and generally result in a richer mixture. :D
I have read several opinions on this and one pilot said he had 70 + hours on an Ej 2.2 using 100 LL exclusively and had no problems. Others caution that this is not only unwise but patently foolish and unnecessary risk taking.
WHO IS THE AUTHORITY ON THIS SUBJECT? WHAT IS THE ANSWER  ?

The problems with burning avgas exclusively show up between 300 and 400 hours, based on a few who burned it. I forget which valves it toasts, the exhaust valves I presume. I heard TCP is getting scarce because of B.S. from the EPA. I'm not sure. Someone advocated putting Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas and claimed that it took care of the lead just like TCP. I also heard that Aircraft Spruce now sells a product that replaces TCP. I don't know the name.
Whenever I had to gas up enroute at an airport, I always took along some TCP to throw in when I fueled up. I never saw a problem with mixing avgas and mogas and can't imagine it causing any problems. Probably much easier on the valves than straight avgas.

Old Pilot,
I often have to use AVGAS when no car gas is available. According to some on the AirSoob Forum Synthetic Oil is not good at suspending Lead so they recommend using mineral engine oil if you use AVGAS. Ken's TCP info is intersesting and I am going to go lookup Aircraft spruce's product. Thanks Ken!

Ken and Barnstorm2,
Thanks for the posts. I have a CHIEF Aircraft 2004 catalog (Grants pass, Oregon http://www.chiefaircraft.com ) in front of me and they want 44.94/gal for Alcor TCP and 19.95/qt plus the shipping charge AND $20.00 USP D.O.T. Hazzardous Materials Charge.
It doesn't say how much to use per gallon of 100 LL in the ad (lets hope it isn't much ~ this stuff is spendy ~ but so is everything else in Aviation :D )

Tim, post the info when you find it. Thanks.

Hi,
From what I understand it is OK but you need to pull the oxygen sensor and plug the hole (a spark plug will work). I asked Jim Logan. Hope this helps.

Dave,
If you pull the Oxygen sensor what will that do to the computer which is relying on that Oxygen sensor info to meter the fuel? Remember my original question is regarding a Fuel Injected EJ 2.2.
I'm wondering if you can just pull the Oxygen sensor periodically and clean it up, rather than pull it and plug the hole (I can't imagine using a Spark plug to cap the hole anyway - maybe something designed to cap the hole would be better).

Ken,
I did not find anything searching the web site. I will have to check the catalog.

Opps, belay that. Here it is:
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/Decalin.php
Decalin Chemicals manufactures products for the experimental aircraft aviation community.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Decalin Fuel Additive in a 16 ounce bottle, treats up to 320 gallons of fuel.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scavenges Lead in aviation fuel after combustion to prevent lead oxide buildup on valves but still allows the lead to perform the anti-knock function prior to combustion.
It is an excellent additive for auto conversions, where it reduces buildup on oxygen sensors and plugs. If you have to use 100LL, then this stuff is for you.
Prevents valve seat erosion from valve seat micro welding. It is equivalent to TCP.
Does not contain volatile solvents so it is safe to ship and safe in the cockpit. You can carry it with you for out-of-town airports.
Easy to use graduated measuring and dispensing resevoir built into the bottle. No messy syringes!
Tested and stable down to 0 degrees F.
Decalin TCP is not approved for use in the engines of certified aircraft.
Description Part No. Price Buy
Decalin Fuel Additive - 16 oz. bottle
05-01406 $19.95
Decalin Fuel Additive - Quart
05-01413 $31.50

Thanks for finding that, Tim. A little pricey, like TCP, but cheaper than an engine overhaul if it works as claimed.

Yea, I think I will order some tomorrow.
