Gyromike, Todd Powell, and myself all monitor the forum daily.

We do NOT need you guys to start new threads on the forum each time you catch a spam post before we do.

If you think your actions will make us act faster and want to be the first one to draw our attention to it, send one of us or all of us a private message.

I hate logging on and clicking on "new posts" to find yet another thread discussing the fact that someone spammed the site..... We will see it just like you did and your thread does not make this happen any faster.

Maybe Mike and Todd don't mind, but it bothers me for you guys to keep making new useless threads.

Nailing spam is like racing dirt bikes; everyone wants to be first.

I had switched the user registration options so that people could automatically log-in without my having to approve each and every user, which is what I had been doing for some time.
But the spammers are relentless so I switched it back to manually approving each new registrant.

Sorry about the trouble.
And I agree with Ron. No need to start a bunch of new threads about the spammers. A PM will do, or I'll catch it when I click on 'New Posts'.

P.S. I don't think Ron's tag line picture is big enough.

Hey Mike, I'm not sure if your site will do this but, on VR we allow automatic registration, but approve posts as the user makes a new post, If it is a Spammer we simply delete the post and remove the ability for that person to post. all of this is done without the public seeing any of it.

Grumpy much ? I always assumed administrators would have certain keywords (like the word spam) set off an alarm or send them an email or ....
I am so very sorry ron though I never have committed the offence you mention consider me pre spanked.
Also please consider that guys like this forum so much and appreciate the job you do so much they just wanna help.I don't believe that anyone that has spent mor than 10 seconds on this forum would think that you Mike or Todd are stupid and insinuating such is just wrong.

James, no sweat..... It is just that each time a spammer comes on here, someone starts a new thread about it, as if Mike or Todd or myself won't see it. We will see it, and the quickest way to let us know about it is to pm us.

I guess I am stupid. I want to know what spam is and what does the person get out of it? What is its purpose?

Spam would be where someone would join this site for the sole purpose of posting marketing of a product or mulitple products. Usually pills to make your pecker longer, sex toys, scams of some sort or another, and so on and so forth...

It is just like junk emails, only it is posted here on the forum.

It is also something that comes in the can that is made from all the parts of what ever that the company can't get rid of.. So they called it SPAM in the can.

I want to know what spam is and what does the person get out of it? What is its purpose?

"SPAM" exists because of a tiny segment of the population that actually buy things advertised by "spammers." Even though it is statistically small in numbers, the cost of sending and posting spam is to tiny that the dollars returned on the investment is spam advertising can be significant.

There are generally three reasons for what we call spam today (not to be confused with the meat byproduct):

1. Advertisers who have found they can make a nice living on the tiny fraction of customers generated by the millions of spam they send or have sent on their behalf.

2. Spam "operators," who are employed directly or indirectly by those in category 1 to post, email or otherwise distribute the sales message OR who are trying to distribute a virus enabling their ability to send spam from infected machines. The reason for the latter is that email spam filters are quick to pickup and drop mail from spam operators, who then need the use of other machines on other networks (like yours) with which to send their message out, and thus get paid.

3. Pranksters and hackers, and spam operators doing experimentation and honing their attack techniques. The most dangerous of these are those being paid to find exploits of other machines (like yours) to enable more spamming. That's where the money is. Always follow the money.

Personally, I think anyone who buys anything from an unsolicited spam email should be shot, burned and then run over twice by a disc harrow, just to make sure. That is my own opinion and in no way should reflect the opinion of others in this Forum.

Jon,

I have to say I have a bit of an elitist attitude when it comes to Spammers. I think people who don't know how to secure their machines shouldn't be the internet... or at least have a 3 strikes rule. If your machine gets infected 3 times and starts spewing Spam then the internet account should be terminated.

Because ISP aren't taking that approach, we are seeing ISP's resort to far dirtier tactics that limit everyones behavior, even those that can properly secure their PC, like blocking ports and not allowing users to run servers on their connection. They are also starting to take security into their own hands which again limits those who actually know what they are doing.

Because they have to be politically correct and allow anyone and everyone on the internet, and there is a nearly infinite supply of zombie computers, we have to live with this cr@p.

Spam isn't the fault of the spammers. Spam and spammers aren't the cause... their a symptom.

Oh, Todd and Mike... that little bit of a rant (hopefully) was obvious that it wasn't directed at you.

Forum spam is a different entity and you have really two options... live with it or police each new join to the forum, which you guys are doing.

I was speaking about email and IM spam coming from zombied computers.

some spammers use is to post links to their own website. Search engines use the number of links to a website, among other variables to determine where to place a web page within the search results.

BTW: I like SPAM.

I concur. As I said in my closing paragraph, "follow the money." If nobody followed the links and patronized the sites, the few would bother. Then too, if only those who were truly security-qualified were allowed on the internet, no business would bother with keeping up sites for the few left around.

m3tt5 :
No you can't get in trouble for clicking on their link. But some times you might end up with a nasty virus or something. So it is not wise to do it.....:noidea:

Steve, you might want to change your wording. I couldn't stop laughing thinking of all the sly comments I thought of in the first minute alone.
