Found these two images while doing my usual surfing (I do that more than TV. If you havent already, check out www.stumbleupon.com it allows you to set your interests and then every time you click on the button you are sent somewhere new thats of interest to you. Its very entertaining).
:focus: These are covers from Modern Mechanix and Inventions Magazine and Popular Mechanics Magazine. I wish I knew the years but I think they are super cool and even worthy of dropping a dime on a color print, frame and then hang in your hangar.
Enjoy!

Fiveboy - The Modern Mechanix cover you show is from July 1935, and the Popular Mechanics is November 1953 (the date is on the upper left in the picture, but I verified it online). There you go!

Arnie,
Both of those have actually flown in model form.

For fun I built a model 4 foot dia. Paddle wheel rotor in 1980. Full cyclic and collective controls. Surprised how well it worked and how smooth it was.
My thought process was to test a low-tech ,low rpm rigid rotor and was happy with the results.
Thought I was kinda smart for a while ....... till I found patents for similar ideas from 75 years ago .... :)
I would still like to build a larger test model , say 8 ft dia.
If I had been born rich .... I would be outside polishing the blades right now .... :)
Dave Jackson has a thread where I included some fancy drawings of my first model......

Arnie - Are you thinking of continuing with your stream powered rotor? It sounds very interesting…..

Isnt it interesting that one of the two covers Arnie dug up refers to the single blade design as the "whirling leaf". It would seem this is a very early conception of the design we just saw demonstrated by the University of Maryland!
Arnie do you know what years those two covers you found are from?
I love this art work I think its very very cool.
