View Full Version : Direct drive or Reduction???
Falcon

Is anyone out there flying with an EJ22 direct drive? I have a single place Falcon with this setup. I am told it should produce about 100hp probably more like 80hp, anyways I would think this would be fine for a single place design. What are the thoughts and do I need to invest in a redrive?

Gary,
A fellow in my pra chapter, flys a custom machine with an EJ-22 with direct drive. The machine works well and it is a heavy single place.
However, I know that you do get more power with a redrive.
The problem is as far as I know there are no planetary redrives currently on the market or any drives (other than direct) that keep the thrust line in line with the engine's crank.

First one: "the shoe boxe" of Barnett gyroplanes...price?...available?...up to you to phone...or make it with rear end stuff of the race car industry!...
Second one: try NSI...can be made with peaces from an automatic gear boxe (satellite and sun gears...).

Be cautious with NSI. There are a lot of horror stories around. If you look at their website, there is no e-mail address or phone number to get hold of them that I could find. There is a print-out form though to fill out and send in with a check. I recently read some horror stories about their turbo'ed EA 81 or 82 with his redrive just falling apart. One was about a guy flying to Alaska with a bunch of other KitFox owners. Parts that were supposed to be made of premium metals were not and this poor guy had a nightmare. If I recall, he never made it with the rest of them.

Thanks Ken,
Buggers! What does it take to get a good redrive for an EJ-22?
I thought that I had looked at the Barnett and I thought it was off center by like 3 inches or something. I will revisit this.

Avoid NSI ! Nothing wrong with the re drive but the thing doesnt last long without overhauling and costs plus you cant get the right gear ratios.
You really need a redrive to get the best out of your machine, I run I Rotax gearbox on my Suby 2.2 with a flywheel and it works well.
