Air filter contributed to crash (http://pittsburghlive.com/x/tribune-review/trib/westmoreland/s_248944.html)
I saw this and wondered would this be as, less or more likely to occur in the type of engines that light aircraft use? Since most gyros are pushers, could that configuration make a difference? Yes, I mus be really bored to think of this stuff.

No, this should not happen with a gyro - if you fly properly (never fly over any place you could not land), as shutting off you engine is not as big a deal when you can land easily in a small spot - not needing a "runway" area to land.
I have had 6 engine out landing in gyros over the years and never had any problem - other than having to walk a long way.

Most internal combustion engines don't respond too well to little metal pieces going down their throat. It would depend on the specific installation as to how possible this would be.

I assume then that in southern Texas you have never flown over any water other than a dry creek.
