View Full Version : New Warp/ What Pitch to begin with?

Just got our new Warp Drive prop and fitted it. Still have quite a bit to do with regard to the engine. The throttle and carbs hooked up still have to do the choke. The EGT senders from Wicks were incorrect, they had sent us the clamp type and we required the threaded Rotax exhaust type. Could not get hold of them probably took the day off. Their bad luck have now as we now ordered them from CPS.
When we do finally get around to starting the engine, hopefully soon, was wondering what might be an initial target prop pitch setting?
Right now we have dialed in 9 degrees to begin with.
My understanding is that after doing the engine run in we then adjust the pitch to achieve around 64-6500rpm at full throttle and accept whatever thrust that gives us.
I understand from the factory that they anticipate with the 62'' and a new 503 we should be getting around 310lbs.
62'' with a Rotax 503 DC DI with a B box.

Leigh, I had a 503 DCDI with a C box 3/1, 62" Warp Drive on my trike. My optimum pitch was 10.5*.....unlike you, I fly at 6K MSL so this may be a good pitch setting for you and should keep you from over spinning a new motor.

You need to find the pitch that will get you 300 less than the max for the 503.
6500 rpm max...so you are looking for about 6200 rpm static at full power .......BEFORE the break in.
You'll be wishing that you had an IVO soon. Believe me ....I know !
When you start her for the first time , check out the idle speed(2000rpm) & the gauges & let her warm up. Make sure everything is working good then give her full power Watch for overspeeding. Do this till you have the pitch right.
Then you can start your break-in. Check out my 503 thread. OOPs I posted the stuff for you in the other 503 questions thread....check it out !

Thanks for the feed back Mark and Chris.
I have just got the CPS dvd on mounting a new engine and skipped through it didn't see much about running in. There is a running in schedule with the engine so will follow that but was wondering how to set prop to avoid possible over-speed.
Sounds as though the 9 degrees is a reasonable starting point anyway.
We do have chokes to do, waiting for the right EGT senders, as well as wiring in the guages so plenty of time to keep researching.

Leigh, more pitch initially is better. put in 10-11 degrees and then decrease to get 6200 static rpm. follow the running in schedule to the letter.

That is a nice little field you have Padraic.
Thanks for the advice which sounds very practical. I'll pitch them up an couple of degrees before we try running her in.
I will see if we can repair the blades on the IVO we got and it would make a good spare, but was a little concerned as to how far down the splits are in the blades. They don't look bad but will take them down to Wauchula and get some advice there.
