View Full Version : Friends in user profile?

What is the “friend” in the user profile about?
I saw that I hadn’t made any friends.
I received an email that Edna wanted to be my friend and was it ok with me?
What am I letting myself in for?
Why would I not want her to be my “friend”?
I am not up on the social nuances of forums.
Do my friends have special privileges?
Why would I want to reject an overture of friendship?
Why would I want to make an overture of friendship?
How should I feel if someone rejects my overture of friendship?
Thank you, Vance

Edna I think would qualify Vance.
You should be well aware of what you have let yourself in for with her.
Yes. Friends have friend's privileges. They get to say hi without being ignored, get to lend you money, buy you drinks and generally be nice to you. Friends are OK.
Reject anyone you do not feel would be in tune with you.
Pass.
Depends on how bad you wanted them to be a friend.
True friends generally can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

I am sorry for not being clear.
My question is in regard to the forum definition and context of the word friend in the user profile, not in the larger context of life.
I like to think I have an understanding of friendship and I have been fortunate in having more than my share of long time good friends.
The concept of permission to be my friend falls outside of my understanding of friendship.
Asking for permission to be someone’s friend falls outside of my understanding of friendship.
I am easily confused when the meaning of a word is distorted.
Thank you, Vance

Maybe the administrator needs to explain the "Friends" function in answer to your query, Vance.
It would undoubtedly help a lot of others as well. ;)
Cheers :)

Vance,
I am not sure what the 'Friends' feature is all about. I think it is like a buddy list where you can see if your friends are online on the Forum, send them PM's etc.
I've searched for info at vbulletin.com but didn't really find out too much.

In other words, none of us really know what it is all about. So don't feel bad Vance, you know as much as the rest of us about this. Let's all be friends!!!

I had someone send a friend request about 2 weeks ago and I cannot figure out how to accept or say yes or whatever. So They may not want to be my friend anymore... :)

You accept or reject from your user profile.

Sorry Leigh,
I thought I had communicated badly and you had gone to the trouble to answer the question that I didn’t intend to ask.
It didn’t occur to me that you were being funny.
I thought they were good, thoughtful answers.
That’s why I put it in this section of the forum Harry; I was asking the administration to help me understand the new definition of friend.
It is my problem.
I know they have other things to do so I didn’t expect an answer right away.
Thank you for trying to find out Mike, I appreciate the effort.
Thank you Doug, I appreciate your sensitivity.
I am often confused so I didn’t feel bad at all.
I think of your as a friend.
I figured it out on the second try Scott; I didn’t want to hurt Edna’s feelings.
That is really my challenge with the concept of friends as it is presented.
It is sort of like Valentine’s Day. You have more ways to help people to feel bad than good.
Thank you Robert, it is nice to know I am not alone in my confusion.
I didn’t mean to stir things up; I was trying to keep my vocabulary and social understanding up to date.
I will ask one my support people. They love the whole culture of computers and reject the more traditional relationships as obsolete technology.
Thank you, Vance

Vbulletin friends is nothing more than an acknowledgment board showing the world who you are closely associated with. It has no real meaning, makes no changes to your profile other than adds a name.. It's a hierarchy of "people you know" and in some circles it's very important to be "in good" with some people and that's why the friends list is there. Edna is your friend and just wants to display to anyone looking at her profile that you two share that friendship.
People can click on your friends name and then go to their friends list and then click on names there in this unlimited looping circle of a friendship spiderweb that really means nothing..

Thank you for the information Bruce.
I am still confused, but less ignorant.
I asked my number one support person and his explanation left me more confused.
Thank you, Vance

I am not shaking the bushes for women.
I don’t have your charm Steve.
I am fortunate to have found someone I love who loves me as I am.

Maybe it has something to do with 6 degrees of separation?

Come on!!! We all know the reason we don't use the "friends list" is because it's just redundant... We're all friends here!! Right??
