View Full Version : SPG 2 Gearbox
Hi all
Has anyone used and fitted an SPG2 gearbox to a fuel injected EJ25?
If so, what do you think? and how many hours have you flow with this configuration?
Thanx in advance

Tested a SPG 2 (2.47.1 ration with grinded gears) on a hydraulic dynamometer with circulating oil and pushing it to 200hp for 2.160hr nonstop, dissembles the box inspected gears and bearing and no apparent wear. The box is safe but would recommend oil cooling, it gets hot..
Thanks Raton
I currently run an Autoflight which can be doubled up as a frying pan. It to gets realy hot!!!! My understanding is the SPG2 runs double the amount of oil compared to the Autoflight.

We done the same test with the Autoflight as the SPG-2 , has only cut gears and testing the same with grinded gears the temp. was considerably lower, simple solution run the engine oil via oil cooler (water/air) in to the redrive and return to engine sump vial an (gearboxes give more fillings) oil flirter. Autoflight is made from a very good heat treaded casting while the SPG-2 would be somehow of questionable casting but surprisingly it took all the hammering we gave it. . By the way, a new redrive similar as the above mentioned will be soon on the market all made from magnesium (no fatigue) and believe they will be half weight / price from Asia. Can you give all relevant data, oil, temp, torque and whatnot once I return to work.

Sounds interesting, what type of gearbox is it?, is it based on eg: Autoflight or SPG design?????
1) What is it called?
2) Who is distributing it?
3) When will it be available?
4) How much will it cost?
5) Have you physically tested it?????

Sorry.. data should be released at this stage, redrives are not ready.

I am looking for an SPG-2 PSRU or any other suitable gear drive PSRU if anyone has one please contact me or reply to this posting. I will probably have new gears made in the ratio I require but that is no problem at this point. My contact info is erickelsheimer@att.net I have heard of a Currie redrive but have no contact information for him and have never seen one of his gearboxes. Im working with a modified Corvair engine if that is any help thank you for your reply's Eric Kelsheimer

You can get the SPG-2 from Canada but I don’t think there is any for the Corvair the closest you can get it will be for Subaru engines. Just as curiosity, why would someone use a Corvair in any aircraft applications..?

From raton's posted link:
You see the the Corvair engine on RagWing Stork RW-20 with installed SPG-2 and 73" KOOLprop. This conversion was done by Murray Green from Rosetown Sask. Canada. He noticed increasing of all performances comparatively with direct drive he used before. From his letter to me: "I couldn't be happier. The gearbox and prop seem to be made for the Corvair engine. A wonderful combination.
There are a number of sucessful Covair conversion flying for many years.
