For everyone who wasn't able to make it to our March meeting, all I can say is "Words Can Not Describe how Beautiful a Gyro you missed seeing today. Brian's Sparrow Hawk is truly a work of art.

Anyone who knows me, understands I am pretty sold on the Butterfly line of Gyroplanes and I have always thought I was building what would eventually be the most beautiful Gyroplane in the world. While I am still sold on the Butterfly line and I am building a truly beautiful machine, I will concede that Brian's machine is the most Beautiful Gyroplane I have, or am likely ever to, see in my entire life. It was really hard not to drool on his machines while checking it out.

Not only is Brian an incredible craftsman, that did a superb job of building his Sparrow Hawk kit, but he has made many custom modifications that really improve the origninal design. He hasn't changed the design or anything that would alter the stability or safety of the kit, but he has made many little changes and modifications and added a State of the Art Panel and finished it off with an interior worthy of an exotic sports car. I just wish the whole world could see this machine.

My hat's off to you Brian, for an incredible build!!!! We really need to get this out in front of others so they can see what can be done, and how nice a Gyroplane can be.

Racer, I know you'll appreciate this machine. It'll be at ROTR at West Desert in June. Many really nice fabricated small touches not obvious in these pictures, especially fuzzy as they are, but here goes:

(1) Brian Bird (R) with his candy apple red machine.
(2) Pod built all the way up from homemade plug; Odyssey EFIS with 10.4" display includes engine instruments and rotor tach. Buckets in white upholstery.
(3) Overhead console includes both dual-plug and single-plug helo-style connectors.
(4) Rudder actuators machined to accept lightweight bike pedals.

More to come...

(5) Lower engine detail.
(6) Tail.
(7) Towbar is made with machined HMW plastic to fit fork without scratching.
(8) Detail on towbar. Circular groove is a recess to match bolt pattern on fork.

This looks like a Grip shift off a bicycle?
Whats it used for?
The pedals are a nice touch also.

The cyclic grips are replica military. The prerotator lever is a lightweight bike part to replace the GBA original.

The (Honda) parking brake lever between the seats is pulled to actuate (or lock) main gear brakes, and has a twist-grip for the rotorbrake.

All aluminum parts are clear anodized, with the exception of a few that were polished, and the Sport Rotors hub bar, which is untreated.

Beautiful. That is a piece of artwork. It looks too pretty to fly...how many hours on the Hobbs?!

A suggestion...if it were my machine I'd use a solid prop hub and add a spinner to top it off. ;)

Cheers :)

Harry, it hasn't had the rotors on yet. It's been run-up in the driveway, but has not yet had its airworthiness inspection. Brian jokes that we need to take all our pictures now, before it hits its first bug, because it will never look this good again!

Brian doesn't post here, and I hope I'm remembering this correctly, but I think its inspection and first flight will happen at AirGyro in Spanish Fork, UT, shortly. We have another member with an RAF conversion also ready for inspection. Chapter 2 is blossoming!

Paul,

Thanks for posting pictures and following up as I am jsut getting back to the computer the check for responses. It really is a beautiful machine that both inspires you and can intimidate a little bit because you know how far you would have to go to try to match what he has done, But it sure is something to be proud of. I am going to see if we can't get a write up on it in the Rtorcraft magazine.

What a beautiful machine! What did you use on the walls behind the passenger's head?
thanks,
Heather

Heather, he says it's a fabric rated for aircraft interior use. It looks and feels like the fuzzy olefin carpets, but is not as thick.

BTW, the COM antenna is glassed into the nose of the pod.

I am regretfull that I could not make the meeting here in Utah. I am sooo envious at the quality and workmanship in this excellent machine. Paul, thanks for the details and Doug great job leading Chapter 2...it can only get better.

Stay safe.

I thought I'd better come out of the shadows; So after a computer lesson or two from Doug, Here I am. I too would like to second all the comments on Brians machine! Words and photo's don't do it justice. You need to come to the Rotor's over the Rockies party and see it for yourself!

I also thought I'd post a photo or two of mine at the Brigham, Utah airport.

That's a great looking Aircraft Curt! Can't wait to see it flying through the air. Heck I can't wait to go flying in it with you. Let me know if there is anything I can do to be of help.

What do the "gun triggers" do on the stick.

John,

I don't know if he has his trigger hooked up to anything right now. But I have been thinking about it and it seems to me that it could be a great way to switch on a smoke generator system to do some sky writing.
