I'll be especially interested in comments from Aussie Paul on this one. Bill Janklow is a US congressman who, after blowing through a stop sign at high speed and killing a motorcyclist, tried to absolve himself of responsibility by blaming his diabetes. He said he hadn't eaten anything in 18 hours.

If I were a diabetic, responsibly and successfully managing my condition, and waiting for Sport Pilot or otherwise trying to regain certification after being grounded by the feds, I'd be pretty upset with this tactic, and its potential impact on diabetics everywhere.

From yesterday's news:

"South Dakota Congressman Bill Janklow is planning to leave Congress next month now that he has been convicted of manslaughter in a traffic death. Word of his plan to resign came just hours after he was found guilty in the death of a motorcyclist in August. The conviction means Janklow faces up to ten years in prison and a ten- thousand-dollar fine. Had he stayed in office, he would have also faced an investigation from the U-S House ethics committee.

"A jury in Janklow's boyhood hometown rejected a defense claim that Janklow had suffered a diabetic reaction. Sentencing has been set for January 20th, the same day Janklow's resignation takes effect."
