Anyone got a Vertex ProV radio that actually works on a gyro.

Mine has been away to get fixed by an authorised repair shop. Changed out the socket the four segmented pin plug goes into. DONT WORK!

Still only recieves when hooked up to various head sets. Wont transmit with PTT set ups.

When used as a stand alone radio it recieves and transmits fine.

I'm starting to wish I'd bought an Icom or similar 5 years ago......:noidea:

Help...

I used my Pro V on my AC 1 and 2 place machines. A King is built into my Twinstarr. I still have the Pro V for ground use and backup.

I have had issues with my Pro V. They operate well but they seem fragile.

I'm having the same problem with my Vertex. Also, even for receiving, the volume isn't high enough - I'd never be ale to hear it over the gyro/wind/etc. Grrrr. My old (1991!) Sporty's handheld works much better.

Are you using one of these for the PTT switch?

here's the manual for the transceiver, the last page shows the hookup for the external PTT

Greg, I've had a Vertex VPro for 3 years now. VXA 150. After 150 hours the headset lead failed. The tip came loose in the plug. I wired in a new plug but the new one didnt seem to plug in as much as the old one. I bought another plug from another manufacturer and it was the same. So I seem stuck with this situation. I now have to hold the plug in with a rubber band so that it makes contact at trhe tip. i reckon vibration has caused this. But having said that, I have been heard from 100kms away at 500' If you need a wieing diagram, sing out.
Hatrack.

"Hatrack,

Good to hear from you, is there still a smidge of a chance of seeing you down here at Easter?

Mate, Mine is a Pro 150 also.

Your story is as mine.

The jack pin plug socket has only one clasper. It is not like it's larger cousins that often have two claspers. I used to have to use lacky bands to hold the cable also.

A straight in plug is no good, too much stress on the socket.

A ninety degree pin plug is better but unless the cable is restrained the socket can easily be damaged....Bloody ordinary design fault in my opinion.

Fred, John Reynoldson sold me the radio and helmet. He is not an authorised repairer and referred me to the only two in the country. Wade Air is one, the other guy is in Adelaide. I sent my unit to Wadeair and although I got messed around with 'time', a new socket was installed free of charge or return post. Thanks to Wade for that!

My radio is still as described above.

Mitch."

G'Day Helipaddy,

Yep,

John riggs up all the goodies and yes you need a four segmented jack plug as the socket is a special setup not interchangeable with other makes.

Mine was setup as per the manual.

Tim,

My sentiments exactly.....a bit fragile for what they are suppose to be.

Cheers,

Mitch

The plug on the pc board is the weak part of the radio. I even got the new socket and external plug after about 120 hours. It worked for about 10 hours after that and started to have problems getting out in transmit. I put another socket on the board they are 3.00 but are tiny and require a very fine hand and a small amount of solder to get right. Then I think the transmitter stage in the radio gave up. My flying buddy Robert has a new ICOM and he sound terrible. I tried using the radio on my gyro and it is so sensitive I have way to much rfi emi coming thru the system.

PTT switch will have to be wired according to how the mfg needs it to be set up. you may need to incorporate a powered relay to shunt certain contacts but it might be best to seek the assistance of a radio shop that does this all the time.

G'Day Automan,

Good Luck......that about sums it up I reckon.
Thanks for your post, it is as I sugessted, a fragile little bugger!

I will spend some time rewiring my original set-up, which has all the vertex approved bits...it's a pain in the butt cause it goes through a modulation box but I reckon I can put the original back together. With the improved/replaced socket point, I may get a different result. I'll post when I do that and let you know.

Thanks to all.
