Whilst my 2 place is disabled I have been working around the hangar and flew a few missions in my 447.

Gees Tim,I'll sue you if you do that again.
You should put altitude warnings on posts like that. :D

Great shots man! That last one made me nervous though... All those trees comin' up under a 447!

Stan is going to have some competition Tim. Those shots are great, but you gotta tell us, high high up were you. What camera did you use and are those regulation flying shoes????

Thanks guys!
Birdy: How high can I take pictures without using a disclaimer?
RotoPix(Brian): Thanks! Yes, lots of trees. I don't often cross tracts that I can not land on. Out of the picture are some fields. So far as I can tell from an older thread on this board, the 447 is pretty reliable. I don't want to ever have to find out in person what an unplanned engine out is though.
Animal, good eye for alt. Ranges are from 500 agl to 1100 agl.
Screw, I'll bet if I flew south a few miles to Kentucky there would be a few fields you could get very high over! :D Sometimes in the old heavy AC447 that thermals are the only mechicanism I have to gain altitude!
Mark, Thanks! As above 500-1100 agl. Sony Cybershot DSC-U30, I wore those shoes when my 2-Place got it's FAA inspection so, yes, I would have to say they are Reg for flying and A&P. ;)
Here are a few non-topic pictures from my day at the hangar.
My 2-place is grounded due to redrive-related diffuculties. I am crawling the walls as I am on the cusp of being ready to take my check ride and that is the only N-numbered gyro I have access to.
Here is the hangar at night... buring the candle at both ends...
Also, at my airport a small warbirds museum is being built. Someone at the airport told me this guy is quite wealthy and is using it as a tax shelter and way to fly his planes cheap. I am quite jelous. The government certainly would not be more efficient with the money..

That third picture facinates me--Flat Land horizon. I grew up in Wisconsin so I should be used to it. But I've lived in the Willamette Valley here in Oregon since 1976, so I've gotten used to hills and mountains on my horizon. Those flat-land pictures makes me want to trailer my gyro back to my Wisconsin and try my hand at flat-land flying again for a change of scenery.

Looking at that 2'nd photo taken from over the lake, I got to thinking about Glide Ratios... Does anyone know offhand the approx. glide ratio or glide angle (max) for a lightweight gyro like the Bee? I got to looking at that photo and imagined an engine out... would I have enough glide energy to make it to that sandy boat ramp? Granted relative wind is a factor, but assume it's a zero wind day. Just curious.
Thanks,

Why are the gyros in a vacant hangar? Where's all your "stuff?"

Ken, what stuff? tools? I have a Zundapp scooter in there if that counts as stuff?
Brian, what is the best glide speed for a bee?
I'll bet bee's do well for a gyro. My 2-place drops like a rock with 2 people, less dramatic 1 person but my 447 has a nice coast to it ( for a gyro ).

photo one and photo five are the same. How high were you? LOL!! Obviously, those are comfort shoes and relativelty low over water, comfort is important. Thanks for sharing. Air is so much sweeter at alt.

Brian,
about the best you are going to do in a gyro is 4:1. Lighter, you'll make that number. You might even do a tad better if you are significantly lighter than the design weight of the gyro.
Heavier, you won't make 4:1. Might be as low as half that. So you see going to 1100 feet when transiting a forest can be a pretty darn good idea.
cheers

Scott, I have a gyro in pieces all over the hanger too!
I am just lucky that I have my AC477 as a 'backup'. I was at the hangar working on the EJ-22 putting in a new oil pump from after work to 1:30am. It sure does help to be able to know when the weekend comes around if the weathers good I can releave some stress with my little single seater.
I am just lucky that I have my AC477 as a 'backup'. Sigh, you have one as a backup? Just rub it in why don't you? I just orderend my first set of parts for my Gyrobee....

Kevin,
Did you order from StarBee Gyros or raw materials from Wicks? Just curious. This week I'm ordering raw tubing and angle stock from wicks for the new Bee. The brackets, cluster plates and saddle blocks, etc. I'll be buying from StarBee, mostly the machined stuff. I'm so excited about finally getting started. Hard to believe after all these years I'm finally doin' it.
Cheers,

Brian Rotopix: Yes, I think you'd make it to the boat ramp in no-wind conditions. In fact, you might have to S-turn a bit to avoid overshooting.
Awful narrow spot to land in, though. You better have a mighty good aim.
