Barry, where did you get the throttle and mixture quadrant? it looks nice.

I just found out today that my Aerocarb is on back order waiting for some part to assemble it, did you have to wait for yours when you ordered it?

anyway your gyro looks sweet, can't wait to see it out side with the blades on and to hear about the test flight,I always liked the Snobirds, should be real nice with that tall tail.

Very impressive.

Are you going to wear a parrot when flying?

Here is an inflatable parrot, just get an eye patch and you'll be ready,
Arrgh!

The throttle quadrant was from AirCraft Spruce or Wick's...can't remember...it's rough getting old!

Tim....I wear a parrot outfit when flying!

Scott......if I hook several of the inflatable parrots on the keel...maybe I could do water landings!

Some details....engine EA82 (supposed to be an "0" time RAF rebuild..was told it was modified to 115hp....I doubt it!) Might be marginal in performance but at least can get in the air while Ron is proving out Racers Yamaha !!!!!!

Rotors...28' Dragon Wings (cause I just like Ernie!)
Prop...64" 4 blade warp drive (they're tough!)
Hydraulic brakes. (when I want to stop...I want to STOP!)
2 - 7 gallon seat tanks from Tom Milton (cause I like Tom!)
AeroCarb (just looks cool)
2 - electric fuel pumps with regulator (I've got gas!)
Dominator Tall Tail (Once again cause' I like Ernie!)
Instuments (who care's cause' I'm too busy looking at the scenery while I'm flyin'!)
Ron Awad to perform the test flights......Priceless!

Barry ("I'm not getting in that thing first") K

lmao, Does Ron know he's going to be a test pilot?

It will be a while by the time he gets that engine and aerocarb sorted out.... I am not sure I would reccommend buying one Tim. A simple old Holley Carb seems hard to beat.

Bill whats his name, with the Falcon like yours, had a Elderbrock Carb that looked like it was meant for a harely davidson on it. It seemed to work really good.

Well Ron I already ordered it the other day and noticed today the money has been drawn from the account. I mainly liked the Idea of the inflight mixture control and no carb ice issues, but I have since read a post that made me have a new concern. seems it needs a ground strap as some have made static eletricity and set the breather on fire in the past. of course this was an old post,so maybe they have that fixed, but it still don't give me a warm fuzzy feeling. worse case I have a buddy rebuilding his fix wing, and I might can resell the carb to him if it does not work out.

Ron if I remember right that same falcon crashed in a River and you even stated in a reply that it did not suprise you becouse the carb was an old harley carb and was not the best setup.

if this setup does not work I will start looking for an early RAF intake and carb set up.

I will be watching Barrys tests closely.

The carb on Bills machine was not a problem, it was how he had it installed, too close to the mast and I didn't like how he routed the throttle cable to it.

Tim, these carbs can ice. When they do, it collects on the fuel metering needle, so instead of losing airflow it just leans out - not good!

Ellison recommends a carb heat system for its version, and suggests it be capable of raising ambient by 90ºF:

A TBI, in any given application, may go years without accumulating any ice. Unfortunately, some of our customers feel that since the TBI ices up so infrequently, they won't be quite as dead as if it happened often...For certificated aircraft, FAR 23.1093 requires that the intake air heat system must provide a heat rise of 90°F at 75% power. It makes a great deal of sense to comply with this regulation when building an "Experimental" category aircraft.

AeroCarb website says the following...

Resistant to carb icing: no butterfly valve to accumulate ice; no true venturi to super-cool the mixture; fuel atomizes downstream of the carb, in the engine's warm intake manifold.

...but the Corvair conversion guys and others running long intake runners (especially VW & Continental) report occasional icing issues. AeroCarb is careful to say on its website...

Due to its design with no venturi and no butterfly, no factory AeroCarb installations have ever used carb heat. There has also never been a documented case of carb ice in any AeroCarb installation or any of the carbs in the same family including the Lake Injector and POSA carbs which are well into the tens of thousands of flight hours.

(Bold emphasis added.) Depends on what you call documented. Google "POSA carb ice" and you'll find discussions of these problems among homebuilders.

Ron I had looked into harleys Carbs also, being that I used to build Custom harleys I have tested alot of harley type carbs, none of which I think i would trust my life to.

To be honest a New Harley carb like and S&S super G runs about $300.00 so I figured I would give the Aero carb a shot. like I said mine is already paid for now,so just waiting for it to be shipped.

PW thanks for the info I will keep this in mind.

Barry good looking machine, just to throw my too cents in also! I like the tail, I will be headed that way next month. 7 whole days at a different port each day. But hope to see you in april in FLA. are you going?

ultracruiser41
02-08-2009, 06:27 PM
Nope...not going to Bensen Days...It doesn't work out for me.

April is spring break time with the kids and we usually take a family trip. (nobody would be interrested in hanging around watching the old man fly.....we usually go somewhere the whole family can enjoy! ) (ie. Disney World...Cruise...Hilton Head..etc.)

Barry - what are you using for the electric trim? When I get my gyro, I'd like to incorporate something like that into mine space allowing. it looks very nice.

Very cool, Barry.

Looking at the tail... are you sure it is a margarita and not a banana daiquiri? :)

ultracruiser41
09-20-2009, 11:46 AM
Just a 12 volt actuator from Grainger.....I have about 3.5" travel.

Ron Awad has one on his 2 place Dominator but he has alot more travel than I do....we'll soon see if I have enough. I think I'll be OK because when we did the hang test....we had a friend sit in the rear seat and the hang didn't change by much so once I get her trimmed out....I shouldn't have to move it much.

Margarita....banana daiquiri....slow gin fiz !!!!

ultracruiser41 :
Got a part number for the piece that you are using for an elect. trim? (from grainger)

Can't wait to see her Barry, did you sell you dom?

ultracruiser41
09-22-2009, 02:00 PM
I'll try to find the part number tomorrow.

Heck no....I'm not selling the Dominator......the 2 place just ain't gonna fly like the single place Dominator!

GyroRon

Check Ebay and search around there and you can find them for cheap, I think mine was around 60$. and they offer them in several different lengths. 3 inches is too short.... mine is 6-8 inches and I use all of my travel.

ultracruiser41

ultracruiser41 :
Got any pic of the the trim that you might could share?

I like the Idea of pushing the bottom to set the trim. I was flying with Steve and every time I loosed up from the controls the bird would climb so I could not find the so called sweet spot. Not until Steve set the trim. then it was ok!

GyroRon : I will check it out......ebay
