GARMIN GPSMAP 196: does anyone know anything about the 196. I was wondering which Instruments it had one it. Looks like it has it all?

I have the Garmin 350 N. and It is ok but it has taken me places where there is nothing there. In the mountains where I guess the signal got lost easy.:noidea:

Yes I am beginning to look at the various type of reasonably priced GPS systems one can use on a light gyro. My problem will be I need one with a worldwide database as we will be taking it down to Kenya at some stage.

I have the Pilot III plus and the 196. Neither have given me any trouble.

I do have a off the shelf gps that gets lost when I get off the highway. It is a navagon.

I read recently on the vertical referance forum ( commercail helicopter pilots forum) of a police helicopter and an EMS helicopter that use a garmin NUVI auto gps as a back up as they can program in the street address and fly right to the scene. I have a NUVI I plan to use with my gyro. it has an off road setting to fly a direct line and you can zoom out and get a birds eye view. even shows land marks like lakes and golf courses and of course still shows the street names. but right now my maps on it are out dated,so it will tell you to turn where there is not a road, but when flying we don't need no stinking roads..lol

oh also it has a bunch of airports already programed in and whats not in you can manually program in.

The 196 looks like it would be a good inst. panel to have and I would not have to spen as much as the guages cost. But Is it?

1. Water proof. I am thinking get caught in the rain and loose 500 + bucks.

2. Will I be able to see it in the bright sun light?

3. Does it have a 12V plug in?

4. What guages would it replace?
Airspeed, gyro, alt, clock,ect.......

I am all for it for the money.
dragonflyerthom :
I read up a little on it and I can use it in my car, boat and aircraft. Sounds great!
animal : The 350 could be used but the voice would drive me crazy " Recalculating "
I could sell the 350 NUVI that I have. I paid 499.00 back about 4 years ago.

Can anyone give anymore one it?

MY NUVI I can just turn the voice off, I would thinks yours can do the same. since you already have it, you could use it as a back up, Tim O. barnstormer has Several GPS's on his Gyro you could use the 350 for basic moveing map nav.

the way I would set mine up would be to plan my flight and set the way points up as favorites, fly to one point then hit favorites to select the next one.
the touch Screen of the Nuvi's make it so easy to reset things.

Sound like a good thing to have. I like the idea of taking it off when I park the gyro. but I guess you can also switch to just the maps also right?

GYRO J. :thanks that is nice to know I will not have to worry about it getting wet if I get caught in the rain.

JEFF TIPTON: Thanks guy I was wanting to find out as much as I could! I am going to find a place that might have some so I can find out which one I really want to get.
