View Full Version : Brakes?

I have Hager wheels and brakes. I like the wheels, but the brakes can not hold enough for me to do an engine run up check over 2800 rpm or to prerotate the blades faster by adding power over 2800 rpm. Over 2800 engine rpm the brakes give up and the gyro rolls.
Does anyone have a suggestions of better brakes that might work better with the Hager wheels, or perhaps a front wheel brake that can be added, or any other suggestions as to how to solve my problem?
Thanks.

Ken,
I can't say enough good things about the current crop of mountain bike disk brakes. They're available in mechanical (cable) or hydraulic, and both types are extremely powerful.
Nothing will likely be a direct bolt-on for your current wheels, but you do have the capability to machine your own custom disk adapter.... don't you? I've attached a print of the adapter I made for 6" Azusalite wheels.
On my GyroBee I'm using cable actuated Diatech disk brakes and the tires will absolutely not turn before they are dragged across asphalt under hard prerotation.
You can briefly read about my installation and see pictures at the Lone Star Gyro Web Site (http://users2.ev1.net/~gyroman/tips/gyrobeebrakes.htm). Obviously there will be several ways to attack the project and your installation will be different.
Good luck,
John L.

Ken, I'm not trying to be a WA, but the band brakes on my machine work pretty well.
