As you know I am changing my engine from an air cooled to a liquid cooled engine. Do I need to run CHT guages? or is the water temp suitable. I am going to have EGT gauges.

Scott, I will readily admit that I am not an authority on this. However, IMO, it's really not necessary to have the CHT gages since you have a coolant temp gage in addition to EGT gages.

That is kind of what I thought, I just really want to know what's going on with the engine, after my last experience. :D

I've had no problems with just WaterTemp and EGT gauges. 'Course I have an auto engine. ;)

I just got through buying and installing a new 582 from CPS; I asked about CHT gauges and they said YES, get them. They aslo recommend a water pressure gauge. If you have a leak you will notice a drop in pressure before any (if any) change in temp.

The pressure gauge in their catalogue cost about $100 and reads positive and negative pressure (to check your radiator cap). I got one from Bass Pro for half that much that doesn't read negative pressure.

Something to consider

Scott,
Bubba said to tell you to get a good quality OAT gage also.

OAT? Gimme a hint.

outside air temp

Don't know why you would want one in a gyro

So I would know to put on a jacket?

Well outside air temp comes in handy for caculating your True airspeed at altitude and would help you avoid icing situations and so on, but on a open gyro it would mainly tell you when to put on that jacket!

IMHO all you need is a water temp gauge with a loss of water pressure "idiot" light on the liquid cooled engines.

A CHT with an "idiot" light to come on when the temp rises because the fan belt broke on the air cooled.

It seems to me that more people wreck engines by chasing EGTs without proper calibration of the gauges!!!!!!!!!!
