Great people, great airport, great flying

The Gremmingers and myself would like to invite everyone to the Midwest Regional Rotorcraft Fly-in. Shelbyville, IL., Friday Sept 10 through Sunday Sept 12. Open fields and Lake Shelbyville make this a fun place to fly for veteran and beginner alike. Airport information (http://www.airnav.com/airport/2H0)

This is an annual event that dates back to the seventies. Shelbyville airport has been the site of a PRA convention. Gyros and helicopters are most welcome and there is little fixed wing traffic to spoil the fly-bys. The airport manager and his wife operate an aircraft salvage business, so bring your shopping list.

Camping is available and food is served on the airport.

This year we will hold this as an ASC Rotor Wing sanctioned event and will begin ASC competitions for rotorcraft. We will try to carry these competitions on at every major rotorcraft fly-in. You will be able to join the ASC at this event.

We discussed these competitions at Mentone and came up with the following suggestions:
Bomb drop
Spot landing
Balloon bust
Closed circuit (A timed accuracy "race" where time-to-fly a closed course and fuel consumption are estimated and compared to actual)

There are often as many as 3 instructors present giving rides and instruction at this event.

The St. Louis Rotorcraft Club, PRA Chapter 35 traditionally hosts a dinner at the airport on Saturday night. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available for us at the fly-in.

This fly-in is largely the work of the St. Louis Rotorcraft Club PRA #35 and has been been supported by PRA Chapters #18 The Greater Midwest Rotorcraft Club, #34 Indiana Rotorcraft Association, #36 Wendell Knight Memorial Gyro Club, #81 Mentone Aero Club, #25 North Illinois-South Wisconsin Rotorcraft, #40 Cincinnati Rotorcraft Association, #6 Mid-South Rotorcraft Club and their members.

We hope to see you all there.

Airport distance calculator
From KSEE- Gillespie Field Airport
To 2H0- Shelby County Airport

1412.8 nautical miles ENE
Initial true course: 074

Hmmmmm. With long range tanks, an electric-controlled prop......whoops. I've been out of work so long that I forgot that I start my new job next week. Oh well. Maybe next year.

Gary, you goofed...you got it backwards and figured the route in the direction of returning home! Reverse the numbers and calculate again, 'cause I really want to know the distance in the other direction. ;)

Stan,

We're going to arrive mid-afternoon Friday. Cathy has a speaking engagement in Chatham Friday morning, and then it's warp speed to Shelbyville. Look forward to actually spinning some air with you.

Just finished talking with Joe Swanton about getting Cathy's flight test scheduled before the deadline. Also, we should be certified Ultralight pilots by then. Getting prepped for transition to Sport Pilot!

Mark: Congratulations on becoming certified ultralight pilots. I will look forward to seeing you that weekend. I am certain I will be there two of the three days if the weather is good.

Tom said, "...The airport manager and his wife operate an aircraft salvage business..."

Now, why would anyone start a salvage business at an airport where mostly gyroplanes....

Oh. Never mind!

Craig and Stan,

Try the Shelby Historic House, 800-342-9978. It's about 5 minutes from the airport on the main drag. Cathy and I have stayed there twice already, and like it. We get a corner large room, which is big enough for 8 people, and pay $69. They have small efficiency rooms for considerably less. You want to call early, as they do a big business with fishermen that time of year. At Shelbyville fly-in time, there's a slew of boats there. They even have an underground garage to park boats in.

The people running it are real friendly, and it's well kept.

Mark: I will give them a call...Thanks. I also am considering in just flying back and forth......I love to fly my RAF. :)

A reminder for everyone about the Shelbyville, IL fly in Sept. 10-12.

For all you Sport Pilot wannabee's, a reminder you will need to be registered as an Ultralight Pilot in order to ease the transition to Sport Pilot. Yes, it will be a little more effort after Sept. 1st, but,,,,, A Registered Pilot will still be valuable. It can mean credit for hours of ultralight experience towards a Sport Pilot certificate. Specific logged training from a BFI or sport pilot CFI such as dual cross-country training will be required. Some of that training can be performed under the exemptions in a two-place trainer with a BFI, however a minimum of three hours of preparation training must have been completed in “N” numbered aircraft within 60 days prior to the check ride.

Greg Gremminger, Joe Swanton and myself will be available at Shelbyville. We will be able to administer the oral, written and flight check and to sign someone off for their Ultralight Pilot.
