Dear Rotary Flight Enthusiast,

Time marches on, and each month I get a month older, but the real question I keep asking myself is; Am I any closer to being able to live my dream and fly my very own aircraft? Some months are pretty tough to find anything I have done to solidly move my dream a little closer to reality and other months are pretty exciting with several events that I can look at and use to measure my progress. Lately I have been making some marked progress and spending several hours a week in the pursuit of my dream. What an incredible feeling it is!!!! I still have all the other things vying for my time and still have the obstacles and challenges that regularly pop up and try to derail my efforts, but when I am moving forward, all those challenges just don't seem near as hard. Anyway I wanted to share with you all how exciting it is when you can honestly feel like you are doing what you can to accomplish a goal that is important to you.

Next Month (Nov.) we will be meeting the first Saturday of the month which happens to be this coming Saturday. So our next meeting will soon be here. I will be sending out our newsletter tomorrow morning so everyone should get it a few days before the meeting. We thought that would be a good reminder to everyone. I know everyone has busy lives and many things demanding your time, but I have also talked to each of you and know that each of you have some dreams and goals that pertain to Rotary Winged flight. I want to see you achieve your dreams because I know how much joy and satisfaction I feel when I feel I am on my way towards achieving my goals. I spent years wanting to fly and feeling like I didn't have the money and so I did little but read about it and dream of it. But I have looked at what happened in my life and I realize that when my dream got big enough, I found a way to make it happen. You can too. It may not happen exactly the way you expected it to or when or how you expected, but if you can turn you subconscious mind loose and let it go to work, you will be amazed at what you can accomplish.

I challenge each of you to make a commitment to spend a little time each week, doing something to further your dreams. I encourage you to make a commitment to come to more of our meetings. I realize you won't be able to make every one. But if it is important to you, you could make most of them. Let's each support and encourage one another and together we can all achieve what is most important to each of us. Don't look at involvement in our organization as just one more thing that is clamoring for your time, but look at it as something you can do for your self. Something that you deserve and it's time you started rewarding yourself with something that brings you joy. Life is short and none of us have any guarantees of how long we are going to be here. Don't go out with your song still in your heart, unsung and unlived. Go after life with all the gusto you are capable of. Go after your dream of flight, and if you are heading the same direction we are, come and join us and find camaraderie and support and friendship with people you dare to dream like you do. Aviators are a special kind of person, and not everyone wants to be up in the sky looking down like a bird does. But I do and if you do too, come join me this coming weekend.

We will be meeting at the Airgyro hangar on Sat. (Nov. 1st) at 10 AM. First there will be a presentation on what it takes to get your pilot's license (or sport pilots license, if that's what you prefer) and get the training you need to safely fly in your own chosen aircraft, then I have a new video that I want to share with everyone. I promise you will love it. This will be our last meeting for the year so come and join us.

We'll see you there,

(Gyro Doug)

Say Doug:

Will there be another Rotorcraft event there in Utah like last June's?

If so, has a date been set?

Kevin,

I'd tentatively plan on the Friday and Saturday of Fathers Day weekend again in 2009, and perhaps an early-bird Thursday. The event was way too much fun not to repeat! We have a meeting this Saturday, and we'll try and firm it up, if it isn't already.

By the way, I live near a light-rail station here, and it has made me think of you on a few occasions. It's called "TRAX" here in the Salt Lake area.

Toying with the idea of possibly flying the gyro at your event, either by trailering there, or even flying the 800 miles there from here.

Since RACER, Tina, and Dave were there flying this year from other states, why not more gyro fliers from around the west?

I think it would be interesting, from a historical viewpoint (like an old west ghost town tour), to see the spots where the famous put their machines down, such as Racer and Dennis Kenyon!

Funny that you mention light rail. Around the rural Hillsboro areas along the alignment, when sailing along at 55 mph (maximum governed speed on the MAX) through the countryside, and with both windows open blasting a hurricane of air through the cab , it is strikingly similiar to flying along in a gyro. Motorcycling is the same.

Kevin,

We would love to have you join us next year. We do plan to hold the event on Fathers day weekend at the same location. I am hoping that with the great start we had this year we can get a lot more people to travel from other parts of the country to join us. Plus we will start promoting it and inviting people sooner so they have time to make plans to join us. If there is anything we can do to facilitate your trip or help in any way to make it happen please let us know. We would love to have another Sport Copter join us. I think we will have 3 or 4 times as many Gyros here next year as they are starting to hatch around here and there are a lot from surrounding states that have talked about wanting to come join us. It's looking good so far.

Kevin, if you want to try to arrange a Chapter 73 Field Trip with support vehicles to allow one or more of you to fly cross-country, let us know what we can do to help prepare, or help mitigate some costs. West Desert Airpark is an awesome place to camp self-contained. There are snakes and spiders, so I'm not sure I'd go with a tent, but some of us also have guest rooms.

By the way, from Lenhardt Airpart to West Desert is only 555 miles direct. ;)

)

I've never seen any snakes or spiders out there and We stayed in a tent last year. (granted I have a tent that rivals the Tajma Hall, but it's still a tent) It was about as easy and perfect camping weather and you could ask for. Bottom line, you can do it any way you want. And we'll do anything we can to help and support your effort.

Just a follow up to the meeting. It was a terrific day for lots of reasons, really sorry that those of you who missed it weren't able to join us. We had a good turnout, with a dozen people attending. In addition to a lot of good information on what it will take to get a pilot's license (presented by Mike Burton - Gyro CFI) we also watched a short documentary on the worlds smallest aircraft. Then we went out to the hangar, fired up the Airgyro Sparrow Hawk and started giving introductory rides. The weather was perfect and the air went from calm to slightly breezy, but it was a great day to go flying and we got 3 people a ride in a Gyro. My favorite part was when Mike landed the Sparrow Hawk across the runway into a stiff breeze.

We had several new people there, collected more dues and had a great meeting overall. Thanks to all who have made this year a great year for the Utah Rotorcraft Association.

We will not be meeting in Dec. because of all the Holiday activities but will start off the New Year with our new meeting schedule by meeting on the 2nd Saturday of each month. So we'll see you all on Jan. 10th at 10 AM at the Airgyro hangar.
