View Full Version : Whats the difference between 6061T6 and 6063T6??
I am looking around at Aircraft Spruce.com for the main frame tubing and the only 2x2x1/8" tubing they have is the 6063T6 and the plans call for 6061T6. I take it that there isn't a problem with using the 6063T6?

I coppied this off the internet. Don't bank on it without further checking.
6061 is the most common structural aluminum alloy (T6 is the
temper state), while 6063 is a slightly different alloy in the same class. If
I remember correctly, the 6xxx series uses silicon as the main alloying
element. Easy to work, anodises well, etc. T5 is a similar temper. H0 is
annealed--not fun to work.

The MAIN difference is 6063 is only HALF as strong as 6061.
Other than that it is pretty much the same.
Order it from WICKS in Illinois, I had mine in 2 days, and it is dye marked from the manufacturer. Don't skimp on cheap aluminum, unless you are buiding a yard cart.
 Oh, ok. I won't be using THAT then...Thanks for the heads up!

6063 is called Architectual Aluminum. It is what window and door frames are made of in stores and commercial buildings. I have 40' of 6061T6 2x2 and have 40' of 1x2 6061T6. $3.00 ft plus shipping if you are interested.

Star Bee Gyros can supply either 1x2 or 2x2 tubing in 6061 T6. They have 2 x 2 with 3/16 wall-thickness, which will produce a mast that is stronger than the pair of 1 x 2 in the "redundant mast" - less work to fabricate and assemble.

Thank for the info guys and thank for the offer gyrodude - I'll let you know, but don't wait on me.
