View Full Version : Flew to the beach this weekend - took pics

Well I guess now I can just make one post and put in all of my pics in it. Won't help my post count, but I think I got enough posts to last a lifetime as it is

Shannon and Kasey drove down to the beach this past tuesday to meet her family who had rented a vacation home on Ocean Isle beach for the week. I busted my butt with work to be able to fly down there this Friday and spend a day or two there before they all came back home saturday afternoon. This is my first time flying to the beach, it was about 170 miles each way - hour and a half flight or 5+ hour car drive! - so I was excited. Got down there yesterday with scattered clouds at 2600 feet and very strong gusty winds the whole way. Flew some more over the beaches last night and then flew home today. It was much better today, not a cloud in the sky and winds were less than 10 and steady.

Maxie Wildes was coming up to his vacation beach house today which was north of Ocean Isle beach by about a 10 minute airplane ride. I was going to stick around today and wait for him and spend the night there with him, but he wasn't going to be up there till late today and I got a case of gethomeIttus, so I here I am......

So anyway these pics were all taken over Ocean Isle beach and Holden beach which was just to the North. Also one or two pics from Oak Island beach - just North of Holden Beach where Maxie was going to be staying, I had to fly up there to get fuel. Ocen Isle beach is just North of the Myrtle Beach South Carolina area, just across the stateline into North Carolina.

Then today after I got back to the Creek, My fixed wing friend Barry T. showed up in this cool plane a friend of his just bought. His friend is a newbie pilot who just got his Pilots license a few months ago and he bought this for his first plane!

It is called a Harmon Rocket and it is a SWEET bird! Cruises at well over 200 mph, can make buzz passes down the runway at close to 300 mph and climbs like..... well.... A Rocket of course!

Nice looking Rocket there Ron. Your owner friend must be rich cause these don`t come cheap! My friend Jeff Rodgers probably made the canopy for that machine at his place The Airplane Plastics Company. It is something to see them make those canopies.

Yeap his friend has some money, but I think he might have bitten off more than he can cew buying this for his first airplane.

Ron,

I don't see why you refuse to follow the rules. This section is for rotorcraft posts. There is no reason why you can't use "off topic" section for your fixed wing posts.

Do you believe you are so important to this forum that you can just follow the rules that you agree with?

Ken, why does it bother you to see fixed wing & Gyro
pix on the same thread? I'm not being cynical, I just
don't understand why this seems to be a contentious
topic.

Ken the first time I put up with your picky comments out of respect for a fellow gyro pilot and forum member. This time I will tell you how I really feel.

KEN DO NOT READ ANYMORE OF MY POSTS. PERIOD.

Will this help you out? If you don't read anymore of my posts, you shouldn't care where I put them.

I do not consider myself anymore important on the forum than anyone else. But this is where we are posting pics. I fly a gyro and a fixed wing, I take pics while flying both machines. I post my pics here, for my friends to see. I will say that at this point I don't consider you one of those friends, so don't look at them!

It shouldn't matter what I was in while taking the pics. Pics are pics and this is where everyone is posting them.

This makes me so mad I can't explain. I guess Ken you might not want to come to ROC cause guess what... I will have my fixed wing there too, at a GYRO fly in! I am such a rulebreaker, I mean who would take his airplane to a gyro fly in? Anyway it will be parked front and center and since you have a hangup on me and my airplane you might not enjoy the fly in since no matter where you go at ROC it will be right there on the flightline.

Have a nice day :)

The only thing I don't like about your pix Ron is the altitude.
You should put up a warning for people like me who scare easly. :D

Wow . . .chill out guys!! :/
Some lattitude is expected and a very good thing to have . . .
Ron . . .don't be so mad to the point of menacing a fellow pilot and shuting the door to an open fly in. You've just did the same Ken is doing.
Ken . . .whatta???

Oh No Heron, Ken is more than welcome to come to ROC. I am still looking forwards to meeting him and seeing his machine. But apparently he has a hangup against me and my fixed wing stuff. I am just giving him fair warning that if he has a problem with Fixed wings, that he might want to consider the fact that my Pacer will be right across from my tent in the middle of the flightline and will be front and center. No matter where you go at ROC if you look towards the runway you will have my big ugly plane to look at. I would hate for anyone to drive all that distance and come here and have a hangup over someone parking their airplane on the flightline at a gyro fly in, cause my plane on the flight line there, to me, is no different than posting pics taken from my fixed wing in this area of the forum....

Ron,

You should simply admit you are wrong. It's not the end of the world to be wrong. I would think that you would be able to accept a request to do what is right without getting upset.

We all have things that we would like to show off - we could post about our power parachutes, motorcycles, fixed wing aircraft, travel trailers, model aircraft, etc. and most of us would be very interested in these posts. There is the “off topic” section for us to post other than rotorcraft items. You should use it. That’s why it was provided. But ... this forum is about rotorcraft and the general section is for rotorcraft posts. You should respect that.

No reason to complain that I am being “picky”. There is right and wrong. You are wrong, but apparently don’t want accept personal responsibility - so it’s my fault and I’m the bad guy?

GyroRon
08-09-2004, 07:04 AM
Ken it is not about me being right or wrong. It is not a rule what can be posted in what section, the "rule" your referring to is a suggestion or guideline on what one MIGHT find in that area. If Todd had a problem with my pics, or if many others had a problem with them Todd or Mike would have moved my thread to the off topic area or would have told me there was a problem at the least.

So far only YOU have a problem with it. And as I suggested before the last time you complained, my easiest fix for this - since only you have the problem - is for you, or anyone else who has a problem and has kept quiet - to NOT OPEN MY PIC THREADS.

It is not like your going to miss much anyway, in some pics there might be a lift strut in part of the pic, others there might be part of my gyro panel seen in the pic.... Either way the main focus of the pic is not the machine the pic was taken in, but instead the ground or another aircraft I saw in flight or whatever is in the pics such as the beach in these pics. You seem hung up on that, the fact that the machine I was flying had fixed wings. I just don't see where it MATTERS??? I see Stans pics of the soybean fields, I know he is flying his RAF when he took them, but do I care? NO I don't, I see a soybean field. Not the gyro in those pics. I don't think it matters what he - or I - is flying when we take pics. All that matters is we are out having fun and sharing our joy with others. They are FLYING PICS. All of the flying pics are in this section of the forum so that is where I am putting mine. Again Don't look at them if it bother you.

You said " But ... this forum is about rotorcraft and the general section is for rotorcraft posts. You should respect that." Well I respect Todd, this is his forum. I will send him a email and ask him to put this issue to rest.

you also said " We all have things that we would like to show off - we could post about our power parachutes, motorcycles, fixed wing aircraft, travel trailers, model aircraft, etc. and most of us would be very interested in these posts." Ken nothing is stopping anyone from posting pics of their family, toys, and other joys in life. Should people post pics of their stamp collection in this area of the forum? Probably not. But if they got pics taken while skydiving, or flying a hangglider, then sure post them right here where everyone else is posting pics, I would love to see them myself.

GyroRon

Chuck be honest, do you think I am wrong here?

Chuck Irby
08-09-2004, 08:34 AM
Okay, Ron, this is my honest opinion: I see your point, and I see Ken's point. I also don't see what the big deal is. What difference does it make where you post those pictures? I like looking at them. If they were in the off topic section, I'd still look at them. If Ken doesn't want to look at them, like you said, he doesn't have to look at them, regardless of where you post them.

Ron, you said:

"Ken nothing is stopping anyone from posting pics of their family, toys, and other joys in life. Should people post pics of their stamp collection in this area of the forum? Probably not. But if they got pics taken while skydiving, or flying a hangglider, then sure post them right here where everyone else is posting pics, I would love to see them myself."

Yes, I agree completely, and they probably have the respect for others to post them in the non-rotorcraft section to be enjoyed by those interested in viewing them. You refuse to do that. Is it too hard to post your non-rotorcraft stuff where it should be posted?

Ron, the photos taken from gyros are very different! They show everyone interested in flying gyros what they can see and inspires us to enjoy rotorcraft flying. It's not the beans that we are looking at - it's the beauty of flight in a gyro! This is not a photography forum, it is a rotorcraft forum - we are interested in building and flying rotorcraft. Your fixed wing photos do not do this.

Why do you think it will be cool to be inconsiderate to attendees at a rotorcraft fly-in event by trying to make your airplane the center of attention - distracting from the purpose of the event?

Ken, think of it as "junk mail" or "spam". Of course you can't delete it like spam (even though I am sure you want to) but you CAN ignore it.

Just me 2 cents!

To quote Rodney King, "Can't we all just get along."

I wonder why you guys get upset with each other for so little things.

May I give my point of view? I like to read any message, despite what forum it is in. I like to see Ron's good pictures and read about experiences he friendly share with us, but on the other hand, I understand Ken. He is a busy man, and doesn't have enough time to read all the posts, so he expects us to follow the forum divisions when we submit our messages. That will save his time and give a choice to him, as he still can see more if he have enough time, by jumping to "Off topic" forum or whatever. It's as simple as that. No offence, nothing personal.

Please take it easy, boys, both of you.

Randy,

I don't think of it as "junk mail". This is a public forum and every post is looked at by everyone, so if they are posted in the right section of the forum then everyone gets to see what they want and everyone gets to post what they want. I don't see why my request is a problem.

I've read this thread 3 times and stared at the ceiling for awhile trying to figure out a solution here.

There are 3 rules here on the forum:
1 - Enter your Real Name in your profile
2 - Enter your location in your profile
3 - Be Nice

That's it, no other rules. I'm glad to see that Ron started a thread and some of the comments there seem to be the best solutions. I think creating a separate "Flying Pictures" category is probably the way to go.

The last rule is in my opinion the most important one here. Be Nice

GyroRon

Thanks Todd for your comments. Will try to work with rule three.

Ken, I am not taking center Stage with my airplane, But I am bringing it. You see none of my fellow chapter 13 members have yet to see the plane and none of them have had the chance to go for a flight with me in it now that I am a private pilot. Same thing holds true for most of my non chapter 13 friends that are coming such as Chris447, and Richard and Mary Jane Oxnam for example.

You see the way ROC works is yes it is a gyro fly in, but it's main purpose is a friendly get together for Friends who have been brought together By rotorcraft. - And this is the way I feel about this forum, it is a meeting place for friends with interests in rotorcraft - Anyway for most of the people coming to ROC, they are coming to have good times with their friends through rotorcraft, to these people it doesn't matter if you got a gyro or a plane or a motorcycle, or if you got nothing but a rental car at the fly in.... The point is that your there to have a good time with your friends. Well none of my friends through rotorcraft have seen or been for a ride in my plane and since I live close enough - a hour away - I am bringing it. I made the comment that it will be front and center and on the flightline cause that is the truth. At ROC the event is laid out in a straight line along a taxiway and we camp along this line and the gyros and or airplanes are parked across on the other side of the taxiway in the grass between the taxiway and the runway. This is where my plane is going to be parked. You will see it.

Ron I agree 100%. Dan Donley had a very similar quote on his video. His quote said the PRA is not really about rotorcraft but about the people. I'm really going to miss not making it to ROC this year but I just can't be away that much. (El Mirage in Sept. - Mexico w/ family in Nov.). While a rotorcraft fly-in is a fun place to fly, its almost more fun just catching up with old friends.

Ron: I enjoy seeing your pictures and really dont care if they are from your fixed wing or fling wing. I post a lot of pictures...and I used to catch my dash in almost all of them till someone complained.

Its almost easier just to sit and lurk.... :)

Yeah but Stan now all the pics with your dash in them show how your piloting skills have progressed in the last few months... the yaw string is perfectly straight in all the recent pics. So you see, sometimes a little good can come out of a little bad! :)

very true Ron, I have not been to ROC in a few years due to funds and other things that have come up,but i have been to a few eevn when they where at barnwell airport.
at the time i don't have anything to fly,but I always have a great time, camping out is the best, the last time i stayed in motel, and it really was not as much fun.
for any of you all out there that has not made ROC ,you really should come on out.
it is really more of a big family gathering then just a Fly in. it is very well set up and Aiken is a great place,in fact i have bought some land there i have been paying on..:)
and as far as Ron goes I met him at a chapter meeting and was impressed that he flew his gyro cross country to this meeting. and if i am not wrong he lives a good hundred miles or more from aiken. Ron is a man who flys and personnaly i like to see the in flight shots from both fixed wing and rotorcraft, I just wish there where more helicopter pics, maybe i can change that soon. I am working a deal on 2 scorpions in trade for my Harley. so if anyone wants to see pics of a Scorpion I have some that where sent to me of teh machines I am looking at.
Fly safe everyone and hopefullyi will be in the air soon.
