Hi
Did anyone try using the Rotax Tall Rads with the 582 and the Flex shaft prerotator and B box. Ive got a 582 and am wondering whether ill get away with these rads or will the flex shaft get in the way ( one of the rads may have to be moved further outboard) or will have to go the VW rad route. Has anyone done it this way?

Paddy...I cant speak for the flex shaft but I can caution you about having enough radiator to properly cool the engine. Although the twin stacks are convenient (bolt on), they must be carefully observed in flight. I have them on a 582 blue head on my trike and had to custom make an in line additional radiator out of a heater core to get enough cooling surface to protect the engine. Keep your eye on the dial. They actually dont get a lot of air drawn through them because they are close to the inner diameter of the prop...not the part that moves the most air. Plus, the bottom 1/3rd of the exhaust side gets 1100 degree heat going through it.

Thanks Mark
Ill keep that in mind. Im goin down to the gyro to do a bit of measuring tomorrow. Ive to figure out also how Im going to mount the exhaust as the new one runs under the engine.

Paddy, check out CPS (California Power Systems) on the net if you run into any exhaust mounting problems...they carry an array of different exhaust systems for the rotax engines. Different shapes would allow you some options....good luck,

Thanks Mark.
I have the 503 exhaust mount from CPS but the exhaust Ive got for the 582 is the L shape that goes under the engine in the dominator. Ill get it figured out eventually

Paddy,
The down tubes on your engine mount should already have the tabs to mount the standard VW rabbit rad. They are cheap.

Thanks Mike,
My engine mount down tubes have the lugs for the VW rad. I've sourced some cheap VW Golf Rads in Poland that may do:

What Im trying to do is see if I can use the two rads that I have, It seems like a good simple system and I don't have to buy the expansion tank and coolant overflow bottle. Im going to check with a rotax trained mechanic to see if there is any problems with moving the rads a bit further outboard and lenghtening the upper rad hoses to clear the prerotator shaft

Paddy,
The reason Dad doesn't use those here is they overheat. In Ireland you might be fine. I wish you good luck what ever you end up using.

Thanks Mike.
the temps here rarely get to 70F, they are usually 50-65F so I may be ok. If not Ill get the big rad

Well its down the VW rabbit Radiator road... Prerotator cable won't fit with the radiator (unless I drill a hole.........)

Just plug up the cap and mount the two you have down low. You still need a cap up high.
