Interesting...some things never change. Steve Allen was a very smart guy, but the first two questions he had were, "how fast" and "how high." The same two you get today if you land a gyro at a fly-in pancake breakfast!

Thanks so much for the Bensen link. Steve Allen & Igor Bensen on the same stage !
Two of my favorite geniuses.
For those of you too young, or in a foreign land (or both), Steve Allen was a TV and movie star. He was also one of the most quick witted comedians ever. Steve never had to resort to "blue humor" or profanity to get laughs. Steve gave us the very first late night talk show and was a prolific composer and musican as well.
Steve wrote the song "This could be the start of something big" and a bunch of other romantic classics. Search for him on You Tube.
Set your TIVO for the Game Show Network, 2am and you will see a young, rising steve Allen as a panelist on a very, very popular game show, "What's My Line"
Right after WML is "I've Got A Secret" starring Steve as the host. Ken Brock was a challenger on "I.G.A.S." I keep waiting for his episode to appear. I'll post it when it does.

Speaking of hang test... While watching the video, I noticed that the keel seemed quite level. I thought there would be that 9 degress thing with the keel. Could Dr. Bensen have put a different set of check plates on just for the TV appearance in order for the ship to take on a flying posture? Am I missing something?

If you look real close at the end of the flick you can see a second cable attached to the nose boom --that is why the machine is level

Thanks for the clarification....I stand corrected again (more common as I get more matured).

One of the highlights of my career was interviewing Steve Allen at his house. A real curmudgeon but a certifiable genius. I believe he also is distinguished in that he published/composed some inordinate number of songs - perhaps the most of anyone (?).
His "losing it" on live TV when he couldnt stop laughing during a bit endures as one of the all time funniest moments in television history.
It was cool watching To Tell The Truth again, it was a favorite when I was a boy. Seeing him in proximity to a gyro was icing on the cake.
