View Full Version : Not a fun day for a fixed wing

First off, no one was hurt, but a guy laid his SuperCub in the drink today... I didn't have my camera but I saw him coming in to land so I just lingered about 1/2 mile away, at about 300 feet AGL to let him land. He landed on the access road, right next to the runway.. I'm not sure why... Anyway, he hit a pothole (one of many LARGE ones) and spun the Cub and nosed it into the river, submerging the engine.... He walked away but his wallet and pride were surely hurt... It's never fun to see these things happen in person.
I circled, then landed as quick as I could and helped him and his guys pull it out and the damage was minimal, considering... Anyway.. I think the lesson is to land on the right runway... He didn't talk much.

Guess those sort of moments never do make one feel too chatty. Sad to hear but glad he was OK.

I don't think the airplane is totaled... They quickly drained the crank case all the fluids and flushed the engine. 1 Wing strut was bent and the tip of one of the wings was bent in. The prop spinner was damaged so we don't know the status of the CS prop (although the blades looked okay). Other than that, there was nothing obvious, but once they de-skin the airplane, they'll know more...

Thanks
I think I'm almost as relieved to here the Super Cub is alright as I am to here the pilot is.
That's not right, I'll work on that.
Thanks Shawn,
John

I've never seen a constant speed prop on a Super Cub -- every one I've ever flown was a fixed pitch. For glider towing we used 180 hp Lycs with a climb-pitch fixed prop. I've seen a c.s. on an Aviat Husky . . .
Is there some special application that would inspire an STC?
