I can get my hands on a clean rebuilt ( by a rotax factory trained guy) 582 grey top. Im thinking of putting this on the ultrawhite with a B box to keep the normal flex shaft prerotator setup. I'd like to hear from anyone that has flown the 503 and the 582 Ultrawhites to see if they think its worth doing and if there is any pitfalls or snags that I may come up against.
thanks
Paddy

Yes do it you will be very happy. :)
I have an ultrawhite with a 582 grey head with B box, and am very happy with it.

Thanks Scott,
The engine comes with two rads that attach to the head, they are the large of the two sizes that rotax supplies. I think ill have to space one of them a bit further away from the head to clear the prerotator. Has anyone used this setup instead of the VW rabbit Large rad. Does anyone have the VW part number of the Rabbit Rad that is used and Ill see if I can source that over here. I think the VW Rabbit over there is the Golf over here
Also Ill have to wire a water temp guage, can I do that without having an electrical system?
Thanks

Paddy,
I've got a 618 on mine and it came with the 2 small radiators. I couldn't keep the water temps down (radiators were being blocked by the seat..etc.)
I added a small radiator under the engine. (the size of an oil cooler radiator) and it has been running great!
If you don't want a remote radiator..just put a larger radiator under the engine and forget the 2 small ones.

Personally I think that the VW radiator is too big, mine ran too cool, and I used a Honda goldwing radiator (1979 1200 4 cyl bike) .
The VW radiator is available from Lockwood for about $125. US.
You could also use the rotax rad set up and add a snowmobile radiator, similar to what Barry did. The 618 does run hotter than the 582.

Thanks guys,
Do you know which model and year VW radiatior it is? the temps in Ireland rarely get above 70F so hopefully the two rads will do.
also found out the wiring for the water temp gauge:

It looks to be a 1984-92 rabbit or jetta, basicly you want the inlet and outlet on the same side, and I beleive they are 1 1/4" dia, the radiator is available in either aluminum or copper.
Also try the motorcycle radiator.

In my Parts Place catalog for vw's it lists 33 different radiators for water cooled vw's. 7 different one for a rabbit. They differ in having a filler neck, core length, style of mounting, and copper or aluminum.

I got a nice one from Auto Zone ......plastic ends with aluminum core. For a VW Rabbit , I believe. $100 & a lifetime warranty.
I could get the part # if anyone needs it.

You could check with Ernie, since most of the 503 ultrawhites already have the radiator brackets on the engine mount assy.
Here are some pix from when I changed the Rad. http://www.rotaryforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14541&highlight=goldwing+radiator
