That was a mighty fine buzzard chase ! I thought it was about to become a pod ornament.

After a while, I felt sorry for the buzzard.

That was some impressive crankin'/bankin'.....when did you realize that your seat belt was undone??
You should tell us what kind of flower arrangement you like Greg - just in case the buzzard "losses" next time...
p.s. Good stick and rudder work!

Usually when you really close in on a buzzard, he folds up and drops like a rock, then recovers at a lower altitude.
I once hit a crow with my Rotordyne blades. I only felt a thump in the stick. No damage to the blade, just blood, guts and feathers to clean off.
Bensen did a test with "Big Bertha" spinning the blades and had someone throw dead chickens and turkeys into the blades. He reported no damage.
On the other hand, a friend of mine hit a pelican with the wing of his C-172 and got some serious damage.

A friend of mine hit a pelican with a ford van, and ended up with the windshield in his lap!
I still would hate to hit a big bird in a gyro.

If you payed attention. Greg only did what he had to do to get that bird out of the aerobatic box. then it was back to business.

Downwind takeoff?
Given the number of flying hours the Buzzard had he was probably having as much fun as you were and enjoying the workout, loved the vid Greg, great to see, thanks.

I can attests from personal experience that buzzards are very arrogant and think they own all the air space. They will not share it with anyone. While closing in on the 6 of a 15 pounder I attempted an evasive maneuver by a slight turn to the left. It was immediately followed by the buzzard turning left placing himself exactly level on my 12. OK, he can have that, I’ll go right. Now he repositions himself on my nose again. I try a climbing left turn. He is becoming concerned and begins really flapping to increase his air speed and makes a rapid climbing right turn back on my 12. Some were around 3 seconds before impact the buzzard does a gross weight reduction maneuver by purging its last carrion meal out both ends. (no pun intended) What I found amazing was that buzzards can do an in-flight inspection of their “A” hole in flight to check the progress of an emergency dump. If I had a dash camera it would have been a great video. Just prior to the bird coming through the windscreen the Copilot and I covered or faces with our arms and sat back in the armored seats bracing ourselves for impact. The bird made a final successful evasive maneuver and we missed each other except for his purging on the aircraft. The Crew chief said he went by just barely missing the helicopter but lost a lot of feathers. There was some pungent odor around the aircraft particularly in the cockpit that the Copilot and I attributed to the deposits made by the bird.
On another occasion at night at 5,000 feet a buzzard destroyed an engine. Never saw that one till we landed to see why the engine suddenly blew up and caught fire. I did not know they would fly that high and certainly not at night.
Moral of the story –
Stay away from birds in flight.:rip:

The sample rate setting on the camera needs to be set higher. Get a bigger memory card PLEASE! I love to watch this stuff, but not seasick. So now we have cattle herders AND birds of a feather???
