A four page article is in the March issue of Experimental Helo mag, covering the 1,500 + mile cross country flight that owner Jim Little made in his Helicycle last summer from Louisiana to Homer Bell's helicopter event in Ohio and back.
He uses under-the-seat storage as Stan Foster is considering if you have been reading his wonderful Helicycle assembly odysey here on the builder's forum.
It was an adventure as he described going for it immediately after his 40 hours were flown off. He describes the beautiful terrain all along the way at 500' (especially through Kentucky and Tennessee), FBO/fueling stops, his mishaps with using a bicycle inner tube and also a cut-off oil quart container to adapt those Jet A fuel nozzles that are duckbill shaped, and he relates the fuel consumption experience.
He had found during his 40 hour fly-off time that the 'copter uses the same fuel to fly at 40 mph as it does at 100mph, and a technique he uses to increase the top speed from 90 mph to 105 mph.
I've been a subscriber to Experimental Helo mag since they started some four years ago, and publishers Stu and Kathy Fields put out a top quality magazine. Even the display ads by various vendors and kit helicopter manufacturers are large and in beautiful color! The classified ads aren't, but the borders of such are.
With all lots of photos (all in color), each issue has many guest articles written by helicopter owners/flyers and CFIs.
Stu's "Around The Pad" section is my favorite, as he bi-monthly reports the latest news from all known kit helicopter manufacturers that have proven, flying machines, along with many photos. Ignored are any of the Vortech/Vortex helicopter plan schemes that are promoted elsewhere.
He has always highly praised the Helicycle by BJ Schramm, as well as John Uptigrove's Mosquito.
This issue has a feature on the Trenton, Florida December Fun Fly at the home of the Mosquito factory.
Also featured in a large (did I say color before?) ad is the upcoming 3rd Annual Central Sierra Helicopter meet on May 2-4 just outside Yosemite National Park in California, with lots of meadows to fly over.
If anyone is interested in having a top-quality helicopter magazine subscription, contact them at: www.experimentalhelo.com, or at eh@iwvisp.com, or (760) 377-4478.
They are contemplating going to an online edition, to help solve the international subscriber's problems of escalating postage rates, and solicit any input regarding this possibility.
