I’m looking to purchase my first gyro which has a pull start Rotex 582 with 370 hours. The engine has been run at 40:1 with Penrite oil, was opened up at 100hrs after a rollover and found to be A1. I believe it to have been meticulously maintained by the current owner.

A Rotex agent tells me that an overhaul is due at 300hrs but that many people run to 400hrs. I have also been advised elsewhere that TBO is 300hrs on regular oils and 500 is acceptable as long at Penrite has been used.

Given an overhaul quote of more than half the cost of a new engine I’m seeking your advice on what happens in the real world.

Here's a link for what Rotax suggests for overhaul times.

The prices are U.S. but your right, it is about 1/2 the cost of the engine.
They do suggest 300 hrs. for the overhaul.

the main reason for the overhaul is to replace the crankshaft. The crankshaft can break at any time though, as many have failed in as little as the first 50 hours. And.... some are still going strong at 1000 hours.

Dave, a friend of a friend in South Mississippi has a 582 with 1100 hours on it and no overhaul. He runs 87 octain, Wal-Mart 2 stroke oil and a couple of ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil in each tank of gas.
