Chuck Beaty sent me some FANTASTIC historical video footage of Japanese Military Autogiro testing.

Footage appears to include:

Kellett KD-1A operating off of the Akitsu Maru Carrier in the Sea of Japan

Kayaba Ka-1a flight testing

Kayaba Ka-2 Flight Testing

I have reduced the video down to 60 megs but it will still take about a half hour for most people to download so please be patient. If the download does not succeed it is because the server is too busy, please try again later.

Right-Click on the Title of the video and choose Save Target As...

If you have a browser other than IE please follow the instructions in your browsers Help to download the file to your Desktop.

Thanks!

Thanks Tony!

A good companion to this video clip is:

Some of these little puppies were fitted with 132-pound depth charges for submarine hunting duties....

About 95 Japanese Autogiros were produced, all variants of the Kellett. One was fitted with experimental rocket-powered rotor blades. Small solid-fuel rockets at the rotor tips over-speed the rotors for jump-takeoffs.

These variants are not in the movie but maybe someday some photos could show up.

Great video!! Certainly worth the time it takes to download. I love watching these older gyros.

Thanks Tim and Chuck!

Here are some photos of an Autogiro under construction at the Kayaba works.

Rotorblade assembly is inverted; bottom side up. The wood leading edge fairing would have enclosed a metal bar for chordwise balance.

The Jacobs engine was license built by Tokyo Gasu Denki.

The only virtue of my $39 scanner is that it was $39.
