Hi all! I'm new to the group and am planning on building a Gyrobee. I ordered some aluminum last night.

While I was reading some of the Gyrobee information, I noticed a mention of a "model engine prerotator" in one of the photos, but I couldn't make it out; does anyone have anymore information on this?

Thank you,

Kandace :)

Welcome, Kandace.

Please refer to this page, at Ralph's site:
Model Engine Prerotators (http://taggart.glg.msu.edu/gyro/prerot.htm)

Good luck at your project. Please keep us informed.

Kandace, welcome aboard! Pardon me for asking, but are you a female? I hope you are, because it would be really neat to have another female involved in the world's best sport. If we can help in any way, just let us know. Chuck I. (not a female)

Chuck, from 620 members at this forum, is there a female? I bet there isn't! :(

Jucie, maybe not, but there are some female gyro pilots. What's the latest with you and your machine, Jucie?

Uh, sorry Mary Jane. (Ken, who is Mary Jane? )

Chuck, I am ready for airworthiness inspection as you can see. :D

That's right, MJ is a forum member. How could she have not dawned on me as being a member?

She's Catfish's wife and appears here regularly, usually as M.J./Rotornut with 115 posts. There is also a Caroline that hasn't posted as yet. Marion Springer is also on the member list with no posts.

Mmm, Mmm, Mmm, I sure do hate that Jucie. However, been there & done that. At least you're okay.

MJ is "Rotornut". Her husband, Richard "Catfish" is president of the South Florida PRA Chapter. They host Bensen Days.

Jucie, what kind of crank case you have on your VW engine?

jucie

Andre, my VW crank case is a regular one, as far as I know. The difference is at cilinders, pistons and cilinder heads, to reach 2100 cc, instead of original 1600 cc. That parts are sold as an expansion kit.

Maybe you are confused by soo much wind deflectors (that doesn't work). Interestingly enough, a friend of mine did an experiment: he striped out all that deflectors, covered the entire engine with an aluminium case and flew. Guess what? No difference in the engine heat.

The deflectors are worth for nothing but keep the owner cool, not the engine. The owner keep himself calm thinking he is doing something to cool that engine. :D

(Man, we are talking about everything but PREROTATORS! Sorry, Kandace.)

may be you cut it to be square at the gear box end?

jucie

You are damn right, Andre. The gear box end is cut to save some extra pounds.

Good Morning, I just wanted to answer the previous question. Yes I am female. And I will definately keep the group informed on my progress. Thank you for the tip on the model engine prerotators.

not a good idea to cut the PTO flange, actually you even need the gear box to have enough rigidity not to have a crack in this flange. Usually the crack is vertical near the #1 bearing (tension crack, big bore!)...good luck!

Andre, thanks for the tip, but please consider that we attach the VW in a ratter different way. That specific holes aren't used at all! We put the helix at the other end of the engine. The engine stands backwards. Am I making me clear? Please try to figure out by looking the picture, because my poor English doesn't help me.

........We always used the prop on the end away from the gearbox and used the gearbox mounting holes to mount to the mast.

Thousands of hours were done this way without even adding a thrust bearing.

I really enjoyed my first gyro with the VW direct drive. Take off rpm 3200 and cruise 2800 at 50 mph. hand start, no pre rotator, and nothing that did not need to be there!!!!!!!! 23' Rotor Hawk blades. I will attach a pic. :D :D

Paul, these B&W pictures you have are amazing. Unfortunatelly, the gallery at your site doesn't apper to be working. I would love to see more of that pictures. They are a nice collection. Congratulations.

And in the gyroglider in 1961. I was 12 years old driving the family car along a country road with dad on the back and little brothers and sisters as observers !!!!!   Not exactly legal!!!!!!!

Wouldn't he love to see how far we have advanced in the last 22 years. On the farm dad had a general aviation plane for trips, an ultralight for the nice evenings and a gyro for anytime. He loved the gyro best of all.

Good night all.

Aussie Paul.

Sorry to the people who have seen them a number of times before, but with new members coming along I think it is worthwhile.

Besides, I like to have a little boast every now and then. They were great days home on the farm with my dad. We were more mates than father and son. I do still miss him, even though he has been dead for 22 years, come October 12.

Many people probably don't know that he died in a gyro. :(

Maybe I should tell the story some time?

Aussie Paul. :)
