A new alternative to the Skytwister and AW95 for the build your own homebuilt helicopter enthusiasts. Though not the 100% plans set, it sure comes close with enough information to develop your own ultralight or experimental single seat helicopter from the Lonestar manuals. Partial machinist drawings, photo gallery and flight demonstration video are all included. Check out http://www.redbackaviation.com.au/lonestar_manual.html for further details.

It may be an alternative, but it's not new. The Lone Star was developed by the late Ken Rehler (of Texas, hence the name) 10-15 years ago.

Ken died in a mysterious gyro crash a couple years ago.

If you scratch around on this Forum you'll find an extensive discussion. Ken's original-design twin-tail gyro flipped about 20 feet off the ground and crashed on or near the runway. Speculation centered on yaw instability caused by the combination of a front pod and smallish vertical tail surfaces outside the prop blast.

But it's guesswork. We simply don't know what happened.
