I found some time today and with the help of one of Randy's co workers got the name of the hospital where Randy is being treated. Randy is in the intensive care burn unit in stable but critical condition. He is suffering 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 40 % of his body. For now he does not have a private room.
DO NOT SEND FLOWERS. ICU will not allow flowers !!!
According to his step daughter Hillary, cards and other solid materials are acceptable. Randy is currently sedated and there is not much word on progress other than he has a long and involved recovery. I know that todays burn recovery work is very impressive. The physical scars may heal but the emotional ones are the most difficult. I ask that all people of faith say a prayer for this fellow pilot. Randy is a member of chapter 13 and had posted some of his building photos of his machine on our list..
I also understand Randy is a Vietnam era vet. And a teacher at Virgina Tech.
Therefore anyone so inclined to send Randy a card, photos, post cards whatever may send them to:
UVA Medical Burn Unit

I will be putting him in my prayers. It's good to know he is still kicking. He is a real life Hero in my Book.

Jonathan.
Thank You for the info.
We ll have Randy in our prayers for a fast recovery.
A couple of months back my 10 year old got burnt 35% 3rd*, gasoline.
The first few days are very critical.
Gasoline burns are the worst in burn cases.
Surprisingly the kidneys get effected the most, due to liquid discharge from the burn wounds.

John Magan wrote on the 13 chapter list about trying to get up with Randy. He is talking but not willing or able to speak with anyone but family. I am guessing best time to call and ask to speak with someone in the waiting area would be around meal times or evenings.
Been to busy to call but will try later in the week.

Jonathan,
Any updated info on Randy? I sent him a card while he was in the hospital. Is he still there? Is there another address where we can send cards now?

Randy is home from the hospital according to the chapter newsletter. He has physical therapy ahead of him for a full recovery but for now he is home and looks to be on the mend.
I will dig up the print and post it if I can locate it.

Randy's gyro was a Parsons/Brock open-frame two-place.
More on his medical condition and recovery was posted by fellow Vietnam veterans here (scroll down or search on his name to see updates on Randy's recovery):

Randy was the former commander of that unit and is no stranger to hospitals:

For those who are hoping that talking to him will shed some light on the mishap, due to his condition and the treatments it probably won't. The good news is that he will be spared the downside of those memories, and it looks like his recovery will continue.
cheers

Randy's gyro was a modified Mad Max. It was a single seat gyro and he extended the keel and modified it into a 2-seat. It looks like a Parson's with a drop keel and tall tail. There's a photo of it in this thread: http://www.rotaryforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12890

Well, took the time and read every memorial on that sight.
Such incredible courage from boys.
