I am coming up on my next oil change in my RAF. I am considering using Castrol or Mobil 100% synthetic oil. Anyone have any comments good or bad to these choices? Seems to me that except for the price of the oil...it is a good move.

Stan,
Considering the high revs the Subie motor does, 4500 - 5600rpm in flight, it might be the way to go. Do you use a 'engine oil flush' additive just before you drain the old oil from the motor ??

Reason I ask is, due to the constant high revs and heat generated, a thin film of oil may burn onto some internal parts, and sludge deposits may also form as well from oil breakdown.

In my own Subie vehicle, I tow a loaded trailer regularly which makes the motor work hard. So I use the additive for piece of mind just before oil changes. I don't use synthetic oil for the motor as it too pricey, $70 - $80 for 5 litres (1 US gal.).

Le: I just pull the plug and let the oil go. I probably will try the enging flush and then swithch to synthetic. Thanks

I think I will start a debat around oil. But If you run a turbine engine use sinthetic. If you use synthetic and fly once a month you are holduing the crankshaft to a rust enviroment. Mineral prevent rust but it sucks in deposit, temperature reduction etc.

I have use para-synthetic blend on all of my engines since 1982 . And I dont recomend any thing else. Mcullog running since 1982 over haulked on 1982 and still running, Pathfinder 1992 220k miles on it and no rengine repeair needed except timing belts. TYwinstart ?? new engine 160 hours . Brands I have use spectro, aero shell, castro synth blend.

But at the end is you feel good using walmart oil that is what it counts.

Stan: I've used Mobil-1 Synthetic since my first oil change and I change it religiously every 25 hrs. Mechanics have told me I needn't change @ 25 hrs. but they're not flying that engine,I am.

I have not used any cleaning agent at the oil changes. Just run the engine to warm the oil and drain. Pull the filter and add a new one. My Hobbs has close to 400 hrs. and runs perfect.

A friend of mine is an automotive engineer, he uses Castrol Synthetic and Mobil-1 Synthetic, in different machines. He has about 14 of 'em. He says I'm using a good oil. Oh, I'm using 10W30.

I've been using Castrol full synthetic since my first oil change with absolutely no problems. I have about 450 hours now.

Hi everyone, with my first and only engine from Raf I used mineral for the first 100 hours. At the 25 hr change time the oil pressure would be 5 psi less. I then changed to Mobil 1 and the oil pressure was the same at 50 hours when I just dropped the oil after a flight and filled her up and gave her a new oil filter. These days I change the oil 3 times to the 100 hours.

Synthetic is an engine killer if you only fly every couple of months or less.

Aussie Paul. :)

Synthetic oil is hygroscopic and must be changed more regularly, especially if used for short flights.
Most musterers use good quality mineral oil and change every 100 hrs. (wether it needs it or not)
