Watched Rusty Nance demonstrate the Carter jump gyro at Fond Du Lac this evening. Talk about impressive.

I was worried I would not be at Oshkosh friday for his demonstration. So the Carter team was gracious enough to stop at Fond Du Lac to demonstrate it it for me.;) ;) Ya, sure.....

Anyway Rusty was just testing it out before the Oshkosh performance. I was really glad I was there to see it.

I did get a video of it's jump take off on my camera. But I'm not sure where to post it. Heres a few photos instead.

Picture of Rusty and Jay together. Rusty taxiing. Rusty in the air.

Chuck,
Can you upload the video onto youtube?

The videos on the Carter home site are very impressive it would be interesting to see yours.

I wonder what aerodynamic loads are imposed on the stab when they do that vertical jump, and in the proposed 2-place PAV how it would effect the proposed wings.

Sometime it takes quite awhile for it to show up in the search engine. They may just update the search thing once a day. When you posted it they should've given you the url for it. Post that here and we'll be able to go watch it before it shows up in the search.

You certainly captured that very well Chuck. In this clip the gyro does not seem to be jumping verticaly quite as high as some of the clips on the Carter website, would that be due to a lower pre-rotation RPM?
Probably less stressful on the machine that way and the ones they post test flights where they are reaching towards upper Limits.

Chuck did you get a chance to discuss what Carter are intending with regard to production? I am slightly concerned that having followed their progress and seen their stated intention to begin producing I sent a deposit together with the agreement in May. Have a cancelled cheque but have not recieved reciept or any production number as they indicated they would. Have contacted Jeff Lewis a couple of times and sent another letter to Jay with a copy of the cancelled cheque but nothing. Obviously this is no pie in the sky machine and I believe them to be very serious in their research but am getting a little worried that I may have been suckered into something that isn't going to materialise.

Rusty Nance, the pilot in the video, had not flown the Carter for about 2 months. So he was taking it easy for the first few jumps. After he came back and was taxiing past us he called out "It will go higher".

I did not get to see the demonstration at Oshkosh on friday. So I can't comment on that.

Resasi, No, I did not get to talk with Jay Carter about production. Everyone was quite excited about the performance and Jay was quite busy answering questions from a few people.

Thanks Chuck, and those photos of your give a very good view of the rotor head.
Is Rusty one of the regular pilots that works with Jay?

Although the basic model is a butterfly from simply looking at it and as a complete newbie it would seem that the rotor and the drive prop are totaly different. I gather Butterflys now have the Carter designed gear but would the other two items totaly alter the flying characteristics, or would it still handle pretty much the same as the origional design but with enhanced performance? Would be most interested to hear what members who are at Mentone think of the demo's there.
Good news, Jay got back about the deposit which is very encouraging as it looks a very interesting machine.
