I was flying yesterday to my favourite field in Modlin (EPMO),
and had the opportunity to see the "turbo" Xenon.
;)
It looks great, haven't seen it flying,
Raphael was unfortunately not there.
I am still waiting for his permission to post the pics.

If it was red. That could be Scotts machine. I heard they were test flying it friday. Hopefully it will be here in time for Oshkosh.
I have a little over 10 hours in the Xenon so far. I have only one icon for it. :peace:
See you all at Oshkosh and Mentone.

No, the one in the hangar was a blue one,
with the non-standard turbo set-up.
Company test machine.
True, the red one was test flown on Friday,
therefore they were probably busy packing
yesterday and didn't arrive at the airfield,
as they suggested they would.

Can't get enough of those pics, hope they make the homologation (?) process in Germany soon.
One matter of concern is their super-turbo-charged version of the Rotax 912. It seems to be a great risk to turo charge an aviation engine beyond anything the manufacturer ever did. Of course we all want more kick, but what is the risk? Any opinions?
Kai.

I believe any turbo charging is coming from the vernerable Rotax 914.

No, it's not, AFAIK it is a Suzuki charger bringing
the 912 engine to 125 hp.
I get the feeling they are going to have reliability issues pushing the 912 to 125hp.

I believe the 914 is a turbo version of the 80hp 912. It goes from 80 to 115 a 35hp boost. So a 25hp boost does not seem so hard to fathom.

The 914 is normally 100hp. With turbo charging its good to 115hp for 5 minutes.
There are after market companies that provide a turo add on for the 912 boosting it to 115-120 hp.

Chuck,
What I'm saying is the 914 is based on the 912 UL meaning they both use the same cylinders 912UL = 79.3 cu in, 914 = 79.3 cu in. The 912 ULS on the other hand is a completely different engine from these two, cylinder displacement = 82.6 cu. in. I know this because I have a 912 ULS in my float plane and would have gotten a 914 if I could have afforded it.
My personal favorite as far as after market rotax upgrades is this guy out in California who does away with the carbs altogether and puts in fuel injection and a turbo. Check it out http://www.experimentalfuelinjection.com/default.html

Kai, Birdy has a 914 in his WASA and had no problems and its done a few hours so I would not be concerned about the turbo.
Its a different thing fitting a turbo to say a Suby unless its extremely well thought out.

If you lose the turbo on a 914, you've got a 912 (80 hp), not a 912S (100 hp). The issue is confused by the fact that what is often called "turbo mode" on the 914 takes the hp from 100 to 115 - however, this is based on the 5800 RPM time limitation, not on the horsepower per se. In "normal" mode at 5500 RPM the 914 makes 100 hp and is definitely boosted already. What's nice is that 100 hp is essentially turbo-normalized up to around 8000 feet.

Looking at the pics of the panel it looks awfully small. What with me wanting to put a nice moving map GPS (eg. Avmap EKP IV -- the best!!) in?

Chrisl,
You obviously need the turbo model with the Dynon 180 glass panel. That has room for your Garmin 496 with moving map, terrain and XM weather.

Chris,
I am doing exactly what Rob is suggesting. I have a Turbo with a Dynon 180 ordered. With an Air Gizmo and 496 everything will fit nicely in the panel.
