I think the reason for the safari being at this price is mostly to do with the certified aircraft engine. You could also say lets put a EJ-25 in a Rotorway Exec, but I believe every body looks for dual ignition. With the rotorway you have builders putting in turbines now for a better weight ratio than what they have now. I flew with John Spurling a couple of years ago and I was really surprised at the amount of power he had with the both of us. Changing the engine might make it cheaper but will it make it safer. ;D

Actually, dual ignition was needed in the old days, when technology was not reliable and above all when big cylinders were used: two spark plugs widen the front of flame and give a better efficiency; that's why when you shut down one ignition you have a big drop in the RPM...
Nowaday, the technology of all-electronic management is more reliable, and cylinders are smaller, and RPM is choosen for efficiency...dual ignition is most of the time a talisman...
I do think that we can make an helicopter less expensive by using a modern efficient engine such as the four or six cylinders subaru engines...
And we must not see too small *(Exec...), but the Safari is the right overall dimensions...

Changing the engine will not make a very big difference because its is only 25% of the price.
Getting the transmissions which is another 25% of the price, cheaper is something to go for. I think asking US$15000 for the main tranny is a but much. The new blade price is a bit steep as well.
Making it tandem with a very lightweight glasfibre enclosure and perspex canopy will not only cost a lot less but will make it a lot faster. "CH7 Compress style"??????????

There is a new Kit Helicopter in the makings over in Russia i believe. The name of it is ZA-6 Sanka Helicopter. As far as looks it is one of the nicer kits being produced. They are still in trials and there is not much info on it. I have read a few things about (1) It is powered by a 211HP subaru engine. (2) I think either a 4 blade or 5 blade rotor system. (3) The cockpit looks very roomy. I believe this will be a top contender sooner or later. I will try to attach a picture of it at the end.
