Started the foundation slab for my new hangar-workshop.
Once it is done I will have storage and a shop for my vintage motorcycles as well as the space I need to build my SxS AirCommand 2-Place (again).
And what is the most important thing to have in a builders log of a new gyro workshop??? Of course! An aerial photograph of it!!

Tim: Good luck on your build...that will be fun building that.

Tim: Let me suggest some rebar around the perimeter of your foundation. I built my stairshop just like you have. The rebar you would need wouldnt cost that much and it will help hold the frost pressure differences in the slab. There are higher stresses where the slab takes on sudden thickness increases.
I dont want to sound picky...but visqueen as a vapor barrier will keep moisture from migrating through the floor. Perfect example is my own stairshop. When I poured my slab I put visqueen down. I lay 3/4 osb on the slab to build my curved stairways on. MY new wing that was added on does not have visqueen on it. I contracted that pour out instead of doing it myself and was talked into it....it doesnt make any difference I was told.
Well...it does. When I lay my osb on the new slab.....the sheets will slightly curl up away from the floor over time. This shows that indeed moisture is migrating to the osb and expanding the floor side making it bow up. Plus....you can see the moisture under the sheet when you pull the sheet off the floor. After each stairway....I flip the sheets over and sure enough.....they start to flatten out and actuall bow the other way after a few weeks.
My old slab.....the sheets would stay flat forever.

Crap.
I am teaching today and the guys are supposed to come today to pour.
If I delay the pour I might be in trouble with the weather.
I doubt that is something I can pull off during lunch. I think I am going to have to live with it.

Tim: I didnt mean to sound an alarm with that visqueen and rebar. You will be fine....it was just a suggestion. That slab isnt going anywhere....plus a real good sealer job will slow down moisture migration.
Looking nice.....

Oh, I know Stan, I appreciate the tip. I would have looked into it if I had the time but I expect I will still be quite happy with the results.
BTW, it is going to have a second floor loft...
And it sure would be nice to have a spiral staircase to the loft...
And I am only a block from the runway...
And you could use my hangar...
;)

Tim: I will start on your spiral next week. I will draw the contracts up and fax them to you......I just need 1/2 upfront......:whip: :whoo:
then I will go fly...and fly....and fly....:plane:
Hey...that will be a nice place for you. By the way.....how are you securing your bottom wall plates? I dont see any bolts....I assume they will use tapcons or power nail?

Your going to charge me for it?? awww... I thought I had the hook-up with you Stan? ;)
I don't know how it get secured (yet) it is a 'kit' I bought. The lumber gets delivered in two weeks. I have not been reading very far ahead in the instructions.

I waited 30 days for the slab to cure and then sealed it with epoxy.
Today, the pre-fab-ed workshop kit arrived and by the end of the day most of it is finished.
The door is way too small to get a gyro out so I am going to have to make a second door above the front door to allow a tall mast through.

Wow. That's a pretty nice prefab kit. How many pieces does it come in? You could cut the doorway taller and go with a rollup door.

Heck, I don't know.. two truckloads!
The walls came finished and painted 4 for the bottom 2 top and the ribs for the frame were all made.
I like the idea of a roll up door but Connie wants me to hire a carpenter and have one make that "matches" the back door etc... So I will let her work out how that goes. Just so I can get my gyros out when they are done!!

Thanks! Yep! that is the idea.
After the wedding I am going to transport it to the barn. You should have got my order in the mail last week btw.

Thanks Brent!
No, but I will at some point have to make a 'door extention' tall enough for the SxS AirCommand.
I hope the Twinstarr NEVER see's the inside of this barn.
That baby needs to spend it's life in the hangar!

Well I have been moving stuff in the completed workshop.
I still have some tools to exchange with my hangar and my business property but it is mostly setup.
I still have to find a way to make room for the engine lift and my EJ-22 collection.
I have already begun some work on my scooters but soon the 'real' work begins when I start up again on the AC.
I have my tunes now which helps. Actually, I mostly listen to pod-casts like Aero-News network, Ultraflight Radio, Scientific American pod-casts and such.
Also pictured is a can of RGS. I bought it 4 years ago at a motorcycle swap meet and the _ _ _ _ kicks butt! I have not been able to find a new souce for some so I am using it very sparingly now.

Looks Great Tim.........So what would be a ballpark figure to build a shop/hanger like yours?

Thanks Autogyro!
Airone,
Well, if you did it all yourself it would be cheaper but I payed for most of the labor. About $10K

Very Nice shop Tim. I miss the pics taken from your air command. guess maybe becouse my first gyro ride was with ED Aldefer, but I always liked the view from the SXS air command with pod. can say one of my favorite memorieys was flying with Ed in the valley at the Mtn city Tenn. fly-in.
fly safe and keep posting your flying pics.

Thanks guys!!
Well, the last 2 place gyro I built my estimate on when it would be ready was almost 8 months off.
I HOPE it will be ready for flight testing this spring..
Stan,
Thanks!
If you ever get board and want to do a pro bono staircase job .... your welcome to put one in into my workshop!!

Tim: Boredom is one word I can live without. Even though I am not presently flying...I am far from bored. There are just too many nice memories going through my head....and I am looking forward to cutting..riveting once again this winter.
I love your shop....perfect place to work on cycles and gyros.
