Just a couple of questions regarding prerotator maintenance, if you please.

1. My prerotator clutch slips really badly, limiting my prerotation RRPM to something between 80-95. This stinks. I've adjusted it as much as I can, with the pads and clutch face nearly touching each other (absolute minimal space between them). So, I'm guessing the surfaces of either the clutch face or the pads (or both) need cleaning up. What do you folks do to make better contact between them?

2. I'd like to grease the flexible prerotator shaft now and was wondering whtat's the best method to use. Some people use the little grease nipple fittings, while others advocate removing the shaft completely and greasing it by hand. Your thoughts and suggestions?

Thanks very much,
Ed in Columbus, OH

So let me get this straight. You want to know if we grease our shafts by hand or use nipples? You ought to be ashamed of yourself.

forgive me lord I couldn't help it.

TAKE THE PRESSURE PLATE OFF AND ROUGH IT UP REAL GOOD WITH COURSE CLOTH OR GET DOWN ON YOUR KNEES ON SOME REAL ROUGH CONCRETE AND HAVE AT IT.

IF YOU HAVEN'T HAD THE PRESSURE PLATE OFF IN SOME TIME, YOU'LL FIND IT IS MULTI COLORED AND REAL SMOOTH. IT'S GOTTA BE ROUGHENED. THE MORE THE BETTER. IF THE PUCKS ARE REAL SMOOTH...ROUGHEN THOSE TOO.

THOSE NIPPLES ARE USELESS...I MEAN ON THE ROTATER SHAFT, JOE ;)...THE GREASE WILL STAY RIGHT THERE AT THE NIPPLES.

EVERY 25 HRS. I DISCONNECT BOTH ENDS OF THE PR SHEATH AND FLIP- FLOP THE INNER SHAFT. I TAKE A TUBE OF GREASE, REMOVE BOTH END CAPS, GET UP ON THE LADDER AND FEED THE METAL SHAFT THRU THE GREASE TUBE AND INTO THE SHEATH. REAL EASY AND YOU HAVE BUKU GREASE ON THE SHAFT. WIPE AWAY THE EXCESS GREASE AT THE FERRULE, RECONNECT THE TOP AND BOTTOM AND YOU'RE DONE.

A TIP HERE...RELEASE THE GUST LOCK BEFORE YOU START THIS PR GREASING, OTHERWISE YOU'LL STRAIN A GUT TRYING TO PUSH THE INNER CABLE, FULLY, INTO THE BENDIX. RELEASING THE GUST LOCK WILL ALLOW THE ROTOR HEAD TO TILT ALL THE WAY BACK AND DOWN.

Thanks very much,

Harry:

What type of grease do you use for the shaft?

Bob;

I can't recall the brand name right now but any top grade Lithium grease from the Autoparts store will do.

I'll check out the brand name next time at the airport.

Cheers :)

Ed, if you want, you can knurl your hub this will help tremendously with the slippage but It can wear out your rubber if you have the engine RPM to high when you engage. I picked up an extra 25rpm when I modded mine. I'm in Texas right now but I'll be back in Ohio May 10th and I can do it for you if you want to ship it or fly out. Your only 1.2 hrs away :~)

How about just taking the edge of a screwdriver or chisel and scraping some pretty squiggly patterns into the clutch plate to rough it up. Don't need to get too fancy or too deep.

That'll work Gary...but as mentioned previously, too much pressure in initially starting the PR will shorten the "life" of the pressure plate friction.

Individual applications for PR will determine the life of the PR set-up.

Cheers :)
