I am gonna try to post some pics I have of the Autoflite redrives.

Looking at the pics, I can't see how the gearbox can be flipped, due to the bolt patterns.

Bet ya can't get a Wunderlich Prerotator on it. By the way how do ya get a prerotator on it? Have to use electric I would think.

Thom, I would just mount the drum behind the prop hub & then figure out the rest myself !

Anything is possible ! I had to do my own custom work on my 2 place.

I know they work, but I am not big on the electric prerotators !

OK, sooooooo.....

If you want the redrive up.... you buy it that way.

If you want the redrive down......you buy it that way.

Is this correct ??????

It can't be flipped ????

The website is not clear on this ..

If you look at the web site it shows one up and one down. from the bolt hole locations I see no why to do it.

Rotax gearboxes can be flipped.

Hirth gearboxes can be flipped.

Souza's gearbox can be flipped.

Autoflite's gearboxes can/ can not be flipped ?

Who likes belt redrives with 8" offsets ? Especially when it puts the prop up ?

Brent, WHAT ????

Maybe I'm looking at an old site. I don't see any up !

You posted one of each. See how if you flip it you would have ti get the bell mount at a min.

I've got a drive on order for my single rotor engine, and the pics I've seen of the adapter and drive appear to allow mounting in multiple positions. This is the "universal" drive though. The purpose-built Subaru drive assemblies don't appear to allow re-positioning.

I wonder if they make a Subaru adapter plate that works with the universal drive? That would allow it to be re-positioned, though it would likely be heavier, and certainly wouldn't be as elegant as the purpose-built units.

Cheers,
Rusty

I am about to head out to Firebird so I will have a closer look.

Dedicated Autoflight Subaru drives are ordered in either the offset up or the offset down position. This ensures that there are no compromises needed, keeping weight to a minimim while maintaining superior strength, although The universal unit can be mounted in one of eight positions, if you please. Offset is 79mm from crank. Autoflight offer a dedicated drive for all Subaru engines, old and new.

Thanks again, Neil !

What can you tell me about the LINK system ?

Ask Ernie, he likes it. It's about all thats used here in NZ, reliable, easy to tune, and not too expensive. Although I see they have a new unit out now. I'm only familiar with the older unit, have had no troubles with this type.

Neil,
Is that engine on it's way here yet? There is an airframe begging for an engine in dad's shop.

Hey, don't bug Neil, he's working on my redrive :p Actually, he's working on your engine, but my redrive will be along shortly.

If Ernie's bored, I'll put him to work on my Dominator. I'm not kidding either. I put the RV-8 up for sale, and the buyer and cashier's check will be here tomorrow. If this all goes through as planned, my Dominator order will be placed, just as soon as I decide exactly what configuration I want.

Cheers,
Rusty (Blake better get his ride tomorrow)

Who bought the RV-8? How much were you selling it for?

The buyer's from TX, and I can't imagine it's anyone you'd know. Here's the info on the plane. http://www.radrotary.com

I only posted it on the Van's forums, and only 3 days ago. I must have sold it too cheap, because there were people trying to shove money through to phone for a deposit :phone:

Cheers,
Rusty (gyro time)

Nice! I didn't know you built it with a Lycoming.... When I opened the ad and saw the price, and thinking it had a rotary in it, I was floored you got so much, but then I saw the engine in it and see it was a 90 grand plane. Yeah you sure built it nice, at least from looking at the pictures! I would have jumped all over it too if I was in the market for a 90-100 thousand dollar airplane.

Good luck with a gyro. Are you going to build one, or have Ernie build you one that uses the Rotary engine, or are you going to go with a Rotax for the first one?

Hi Ron,

Thanks for the comments on the RV-8. The new owner's check is on my desk, and he's planning to fly it home tomorrow morning. Blake missed riding in two RV-8's now :p

As for the Dominator, look for a new post on this soon. At this point, there's virtually no doubt I'll be ordering a Dominator, but the engine decision isn't so clear.

Cheers,
Rusty

Neil, what is the standard prop hub bolt pattern on your redrives ?

Can the prop hub be changed ?

What ratio do you like for a 68" prop on an EJ ?

Will the EJ redrive fit ALL EJ engines ? (2.0, 2.2 , 2.5 )

Does Ernie have them in stock ?

Also after looking at the pics of my redrive/ prerotator combinatin......do you feel it would be alright to use the Wunderlich style drum & wheel PR on your redrive ?

Neil, I have my hooks in a used EJ25. It will be removed from the vehicle with ECU & harness for me to pickup. 2001 with 56,000 miles on it.

Is there anything else that I should grab that will help install the Autoflight PSRU?

Could you answer the questions in the previous post?

Who are the USA dealers for the redrive?

Ernie at RFD & Ron at RAM ? Do either have your redrives in stock ?

We will be needing 2 EJ redrives, what is the most cost effective way to get them ?

Chris,
I am about to go out to dad's place. I will find out if he has any redrives in stock.

Rusty, since you've got some "play money" on hand, let me heartily recommend the Rotax 900 series. I have a 912S on my 2-place Dominator. Love it.

It's a set-it-and-forget it powerplant. It's expensive up front, but no more so than a 2-stroke over the life of the engine. And it's only a little heavier than a 2-stroke.

Doug,
He already has a 582 powered Dominator.
Chris,
Dad no longer sells gearboxes. You will have to order directly from Neil.

NEIL HINTZ, If you see this please view my thread under AIR COMMAND-EJ25.

I am posting pics & asking some questions about installing my Autoflight gearbox.

I would like some feedback if you could.

So far I really love this PSRU ! Thanks
