Has anyone had trouble with the Sky Sports tach on a Rotax 503? I have put two separate tachs on my 503, and neither have worked. I checked the latest one with a multimeter to make sure it functioned before installation.

Upon starting the engine, the tach showed a slight deflection with the needle, then nothing. When I checked the continuity with the meter, it showed an open (no resistance) circuit.

It was installed as per the directions, attached to the grey wire and to ground. Is it possible that the votlage off the pickup is too great?

Any thoughts, or suggestions for another tach would be appreciated.

PS I spent last week training with Ron Menzie, it was great! His technique for training is excellent, his equipment is top notch.

should be the yellow wire? Do you have a voltage regulator? CPS has a very clear hook up diagram. also son tach have a dmall wiore loop on the back if you get a small reading you need to cut it . This is the 1 oulse or two pulse jumper wire.

I imagine that yours is made by Westberg with a Skysports logo. I have the same on my 447 but with an hour meter. I powered the 12v to the h.m. with a reg rec. Worked for 75 hrs., then the h.m. stopped working but the tach has always worked great.

I sent it to Westberg & they fixed it . I also bought a Low Power Adpt. from them & got rid of the Reg/Rec. Now The wires from one of the AC coils (yellows or greens) power my tach & L.P.A. which supplies the 12v to the Hr meter. Works great! Are you sure that you are using the right wires? Were they both new units?

I'd check the wire loop. The instructions should explain if it needs to be cut. Also, I thought the grey connects to the engine rather than ground, but I am probably wrong.

Thanks for the input, it made me go back to the operators manual and the and the instruction sheet from WESTACH. The grey wire is designated in the operators manaual as the rev. counter cable. The WESTACH instruction sheet states to connect pin 2 to the grey wire, pin 5 to ground. This was done. What was NOT done was to cut the loop wire (@#$*).
