I copied this from another Post, I believe we all are very fortunate to have such a qualified fellow Gyro Pilot taken care of us… Please welcome Roy Davis
Hi fellow gyro aviators.
Scott Lewis, our new Sunstate president has been twisting my arm to get involved in the forum and also asked if I would be safety director for Bensen Days. I have been attending Bensen Days for the last 13 years and I do think that we can make it a really great fly-in once again. Let me give you some of my background in aviation which, hopefully, will enable me to be of some use to our group.
I started my flying career in the South African Airforce in 1976, training on T6's and a light Italian jet trainer. I then transitioned to helicopters and flew a range of French helicopters including Alouettes, Pumas and Super Frelons in transport and gunship roles. I subsequently spent 4 years involved in counter-insurgency operations. After way too much luck (and not much skill!) and after the loss of too many close friends, I decided that a career in comercial aviation would be more conducive to my longevity.
I left the Airforce in 1982 and flew helicopters and fixed wings in corporate and charter operations. I was then fortunate to get an opportunity to come to the US and managed to get hired by a commuter airline in St Louis for 3 years and then by American Airlines where I have worked for the last 20 years. I am currently flying as captain on our international routes on the Boeing 757 and 767.
In 1990 I bought my first gyrocopter, an Air Command 532 and flew that for 10 years before I became enlightened with center-line-thrust machines (thanks Ernie) and have enyoyed many years of the most fun flying imaginable.
Now that you have all nodded off to sleep, hopefully I can have something to contribute to the forum.
Steve and Scott, just to name a few, I agree with your inputs and hopefully we can get everyone onto a path to safe, legal and most of all , fun flying.
