ok being the sleazy bastard I am I cought the perfect pet for me....lol
saturday I went to check my live animal trap that I set out for racoons out at my garden pond.
Had not checked it in several day but saw the door was closed. I could not see anything in it until I walked up close to it and what did I find but a baby possum.
Always thought it would be cool to tame one as a pet. anyway as of today he is getting used to his cage and being handled for a short time. I think he is going to make a nice pet.
btw he got his name becouse thats the way you normally see his kind around here....lol
yeah I know I ain't right.
anybody else know anyone that has had a possum for a pet?

That looks like a baby. Good. Just about anything, if treated with kindness and patience can be a good pet, if you get it young enough. I've had a prairie dog a ferret and a flying squirrel....all happy little souls. Those are some awesome teeth though, aren't they? My prairie dog had teeth like x-acto knives and he never bit me. It just required lots of belly scratches. I don't know how a marsupial likes to be treated.

We already knew you wern't rite.
Did you know those things can swim under water just like a Beaver or Nutri Rat.
Yep and they can kick some a$$ too if provoked.
Raccoons steer clear of Opossums, who would have thought?
I had one was I was a kid but I got mine real tiny and must have been just out the pouch.
They clean up real well and some Pert Plus shampoo makes em really really soft.
They can carry rabies and vets frown on owning them as pets around here and they don't like working on em.
Just watch him real close for a few weeks and see if he calms down and isn't acting sick from stress.
If it's a male that sucker will get really big on dog food.
I didn't care to feed mine cat food because it's droppings stank and it will tend to recycle.
The females make better pets but watch it when it gets that time of the month.
I kept mine outside in a very large rabbit cage and only brought it indoors from time to time.
I spent a lot of time with mine but I was always outside playing with it.
They get just like a cat but more loving I think.
They will and can deal with going back to the wild really easy.
Just keep a dish of food and water outside and it will come back every night to eat.
If you keep it inside it will sh!t behind the couch, for sure.
They love couches for some reason, maybe mine was trying to tell me something.

Armadillos are lousy pets but good to eat!
The scape from impossible places.
I had more on my plate in the US than in Brazil, they are easy to find and catch in Florida.

yeah this one is still fairly small. I read they have 50 teeth. so far he has not tryed to bite. he would open his mouth wide and growl, but when i called his bluff and put my hand near him he just closes it and calms down.
so far he seems to like it when ya rub him under his neck and back of head.

thats good to know,I plan to try and give it a bath soon, didn't want to drownd him.
They clean up real well and some Pert Plus shampoo makes em really really soft.
I will have to try the pert shampoo and see how it works out.

so far he is adjusting well to his cage and being around me. yesterday he was out of his hide box for the for time while i was in the shop. and my buddy joe came over to get the bikes and go Rideing.I was sure the harleys would spook him but he just sat there still eatting.
If it's a male that sucker will get really big on dog food.
yeah it's a male. so far I have just been feeding him fruits, but going to try him on more stuff, met a girl at the bar last night that had one, they let it run free in the house and she gave me some tips on what they like.
where did you keep it in the winter?
I spent a lot of time with mine but I was always outside playing with it.

cool I was not sure how tame they get.
I will let ya know how it goes. so far I am suprised how tame he has gotten in just a few days. he seems really smart.

I always wanted one of those, in fact when I went to Oklahoma to trade my bike for those Scorpions,I told the guy to try and catch me one. but he didn't have enough time. did see about a million of them squashed on the highway on the way home.

Tim,
That's about the only critter I haven't had. I suppose they are about like racoons, ferrets, skunks and porccupines. The porky was the gentlest animal I ever had. (You learn real quick: nose to tail, never go backwards!!) My two ferrets are as loving and gentle as ferrets can be. Our female will sleep in your lap. The male only has a 15 second attention span.

well when I went into the shop today I found Roadkill hanging on the plexiglass wall of the cage. smart little bugger.
later I fed him some apple souce cake that mom made awhile back.
he really liked that.
He still growls some when ya first pick him up. but he seems to be getting more use to his cage everyday. it funny to watch him becouse he moves like he is in slow motion.
I think I will let him get alot more use to me before I even think of trying to give him a bath. one post mentioned Prell shampoo, oh yeah I can see me trying to lather him up and keep all my fingers..lol

Tim...seeing Road Kill made me remember about the possum I saw on Highway 51 in Tenn one night. I was cruising in my car to Memphis, late at night. Suddenly, a huge possum in the road, staring at me. I dont swerve for critters. At the last second, he stood up, opened his mouth, trying to stand his ground. Thunk. More Road Kill.

Paul,
Next time you're on the bike, think about all 50 of those needle sharp teeth and the thickness of your boots. One of our guys at Bragg learned the hard way: Don't do no 'possum kickin' when yer on the bike! It took over 50 stitches to put his foot back together and the possum lived. Combat boots are no match for a mad 'possum!

You have some nerve Animal. You could give that critter rabies or something !
Locals tell me possums are only good for stealing your pets dog or cat food, they have extra sharp teeth, the will run but can turn if provoked. They can carry rabies and just about anything else. Oh, and if you get hungry I hear they taste like boiled car tires. They taste horrible. Not that I have sampled one. Why not a pet bunny. Once you tame him he is yours. Lots of dead ones in the roads this time of year around here....

OK cody whats the full story, was the guy on a bike ,or just in the woods and kicked it.
the girl I met at the bar that use to have one told me that her possum was very protective of her.some guy broke into her house and attacked her and the possum jumped all over the guy.

Tim, my brother & I caught a real tiny one in a box trap once, but we released him. I wished that we had kept him as a pet.
Nope , I don't know anyone that raised an opossum, Good Luck !
We did raise some coons & a Red Fox though.

you would think but I was surprised to see him grooming him self like a cat does. in fact he was licking his paws clean everytime he gets done eatting.
still not to sure about trying to give him a bath other then drop him in the water by his tail..lol
I put ceder chipps in his cage and it really don't smell bad at all. not near as bad as my old reptiles used to smell.
oh well time will tell on how tame he gets. I am sure even at this point if I let it go it would return.

better give him more then 5 seconds unless ya wanted a face of bounceing buck shot. possums be slow. 5 seconds he would probably still be near your feet.
don't know why you would want to kill one for no reason anyway. they eat snakes, mice and insects, they don't dig up gardens..and it is very rare for them to carry Rabies or distemper.
this info I was given to me by the local animal control office. Now a raccon on the other hand, around here there is a bad out break of rabies in coons. so I even have animal controlk pick up the babys when I catch them.
only problem i have had with a possum in the past, was one night heard someing sounded just like someone walking in the front yard. had been a repot of an escaped convict in the area. when out with the M-1 and a spot light to see who was out there....no one ever comes to the front door here and they sure would not be in the middle of the front yard unless up to something. and I hear this sound like foot steps getting closer. shineing light around still seeing nothing. I finely shined the light lower and there was this big ole possum slowly walking across the yard. but it sounds just like a person walking in the leafs. and no I did not shot that one either.
stangest thing I have found in our yard at night was cows. still not sure where they came from.
came in one night at 2:00 a.m. on the Harley, and there they where.

I kill around 10 a year. They seem to like my back porch for some reason. No cat or dog food around. They seem to roll around and leave some very greasy hair. Around the cities they are usless. Its always open season on opposums and skunks. And when actually in season, racoons. They tear up the garbage then the opposums spread it all around. All of those critters seems to live under peoples houses and mess them up. Also we have alot of ground hogs. Another worthless animal. I use to kill aolt of them, but not so many anymore. I think the coyote's have taken that job. And yes I shoot plenty of coyote's also. Tim. Do you have a m-1 garrand or carbine? I think they both shoot very nice.

Tim,
We were coming back from Camp McKall and doing around 40~45mph when Chuck tried to kick the 'possum. I don't know what the was thinking. I don't even kick aluminum cans at that speed. He kept the bike up, somehow (will a CB900 even fall over if you forget to put the stand down?). Since we were in full field gear, we had all the first-aid stuff with us. We were only a couple of miles from Womack Army Hospital, so he rode it on in after we tied his foot back together. The Major that sewed him up said he was just the unfortuante rider that got tagged for 'possum retaliation against motor vehicles. It also wasn't the first time she had seen a biker get bit by a 'possum.

yeah I am out in the county, I can see how if they got under the house they could be a problem. I have a swamp in my back yard so we get all kind of things come out of the swamp.everything from snakes to deer. I have an M-1 Carbine.

Brent,
Everyone has to be somewhere. About the only useless creatures I know of is a mosquito, and politicians.
All the others have a job to do. People around here kill all the snakes then wonder why the rodents are all over. Be let be....
